Kong Isn't The Monster Gojira Needs To Worry About In Godzilla vs Kong
Godzilla’s claim to the title of King of the Monsters will be challenged by Kong in Godzilla vs. Kong, but his biggest threat may actually be a different monster entirely. Based on previous Godzilla movies, Mechagodzilla is a much more dangerous opponent for Gojira.
Directed by Adam Wingard and set for a March 2022 release, the fourth MonsterVerse installment will see the King of the Monsters square off against the King of Skull Island. It will be the first fight between the two pop culture icons since they clashed in Toho’s 1962 classic, King Kong vs. Godzilla. The battle will take place in the midst of Monarch’s investigation into the history of the Titans and a human conspiracy to eliminate all the Titans in the MonsterVerse. At least two other new Titans – Mechagodzilla and Nozuki – are expected to appear in the movie in some capacity, but it's not altogether clear how they’ll factor into the story.
It’s been confirmed that Godzilla vs. Kong will have a definitive winner, which means that Godzilla can lose at the end of the movie. But, even though Kong is getting a massive size upgrade and possibly a new weapon to boot, Godzilla fans should actually be more concerned about what will happen when the King of the Monsters fights Mechagodzilla. Godzilla could defeat Kong in the film, and later lose his life saving the planet from his robotic counterpart.
Looking at the challenge that Mechagodzilla has posed to Godzilla in past movies, it makes sense that he would be more problematic for him than Kong. Kong beat Godzilla before, but only because he possessed electrical powers at the time. Kong, as intelligent and agile as he may be, will be at a severe disadvantage when he goes up against Godzilla’s atomic breath in the MonsterVerse. Kong has no proper defense for that, whereas Mechagodzilla always comes prepared when he fights Godzilla. Due to his wide array of missiles, laser cannons, and energy rays, Mechagodzilla has no shortage of weapons he can employ against Godzilla when there’s distance between them.
Mechagodzilla may be created by human technology, but he was created from Godzilla’s DNA, which explains why he’s so powerful. He tends to hit Godzilla hard, and is able to stand up to a lot of punishment. Godzilla has fought Mechagodzilla in five movies, and in two of those battles he needed help from another monster to win. In Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla, Godzilla had no assistance, but he wasn’t able to finish off Mechagodzilla either. The fight concluded with a badly damaged Godzilla retreating, which is a rare ending for Godzilla movie.
To see just how devastating in combat Mechagodzilla can be, look no further than 1992’s Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II. Mechagodzilla unleashed an electrified harpoon-like weapon on Godzilla that easily shot through his muscle tissue and penetrated his second brain, which is something that no monster has ever done before or since. Godzilla was left paralyzed and on the brink of death. The only thing that allowed him to live through that fight was a sacrifice from Rodan, who provided Godzilla with what was left of his life force. This moment cemented Mechagodzilla’s status as one of Godzilla’s deadliest villains ever. It’s likely that the MonsterVerse will equip its Mechagodzilla with a similar - if not even more lethal - arsenal of high-tech weapons. Kong is powerful to be sure, but will he be as formidable as the robotic Godzilla? If Godzilla isn’t careful, he could meet his end at the hands of Mechagodzilla in Godzilla vs. Kong.
