Guy Sebastian Crashed a Sydney School Assembly Who Were Singing His Hit Song 'Choir' Yesterday
Guy Sebastian showed up unannounced to a Sydney school choir practice on Wednesday - at the exact moment they were performing his song 'Choir'.
The students from St Joan of Arc Catholic Primary School in Haberfield were also treated to the first-ever live performance of Guy Sebastian's new single, 'Standing With You' in a stunt for Kyle and Jackie O.
In a video posted to Instagram, Guy explained that the choir had been learning his 2019 hit for the last year. "So I'm going to pop in and surprise them as they're singing the song and we'll see if they notice me."
As the choir reached the final chorus, he emerged, microphone in hand, to sing along, and the students' thrilled reactions were too precious! They were all so overwhelmed, some screaming with joy, others literally crying, they stopped singing, even as Guy urged them to continue.
Eventually they did manage to compose themselves and start singing again. "Great job!" Guy complimented them at the end of the song.
"Hey everybody, I am a Guy Sebastian lookalike," he said as he arrived. "No, I'm just joking. I am Guy Sebastian - I'm the person who sings that song."
He also asked the students if they watched The Voice, and, of course, the answer was a resounding yes, in the most schoolkid way: politely raised hands.
Upon a student's request, Guy agreed to sing his latest song, 'Standing With You', which he released on June 26.
"So this is the first time I've ever sung this song, I haven't sung this since the recording studio where I wrote it," he offered. After the performance he offered elbow-taps and photo opps with the kids.
News.com.au writes that Guy reflected on the moment afterwards, saying it was "really cool" to perform the song for the first time ever to kids.
"It was also the first time I've sung a song live in front of people since COVID, so it was really special that it was at a small school with such talent & heart at the St Joan Of Arc Catholic Primary School in Haberfield.
"It was really moving to see kids so emotional and it was a very special moment for me."
Sharing the video to Instagram, Guy wrote: "I had the honour of surprising the incredible students at @sja_haberfield_school where I performed 'Choir' and 'Standing With You' ???????? What an emotional and beautiful day, big love to everyone involved and all the wonderful kids - you truly touched my heart. ????."
Commenting on the post, Guy's wife Jules summed up how everyone watching was feeling: "???????????? It's actually too much!!!!"
She was joined in her praise by people including singer Samantha Jade and presenter Brooke Boney, who wrote: "This made me cry! Their little faces when they realise it's you ????????❤️❤️."
The wholesome content is a counterpoint to the other reason Guy Sebastian is currently in the news - his former manager Titus Day was yesterday arrested and charged by NSW Police for allegedly defrauding Guy of $1.15 million over seven years, from December 2013 to April 2020, as ABC reports.
In a statement posted to Instagram this morning, Guy wrote about their "ongoing dispute": "I am absolutely devastated to learn the nature and detail of these charges.
"Over these last years, my integrity and reputation have been questioned, and many untruths have been publicly stated. For me, this has been deeply personal and this period has been the toughest of my life. These charges are a sad vindication of my position.
"No one in my industry deserves this to happen and I hope my case can serve as an example to all artists about the importance of transparency and trust between a manager and an artist."
