Division 2: How to Defeat Lieutenant Gray (The Easy Way)
The new Operation Iron Horse Raid from Division 2 is here with the first challenge to tackle is killing Lieutenant Gray, and he is not happy that agents have shown up to take him down. These bosses have some unique twists to them, and Gray feels like a souped-up Hunter with some of the skills and abilities that he has. Gray has a few extra twists and turns about him that make him very unique against some of the other named bosses and enemies in Division 2, so be prepared for an all-out brawl against him.
With the Iron Horse raid comes a few new challenges that Massive threw in to get some different gameplay. As opposed to Operation Dark Hours, Operation Iron Horse was said to be more about puzzle-solving than having it be an epic DPS check. With that being said, to get players back into the new raid, the first boss is effectively another DPS check, but don't lose heart. It might be another DPS check, although it's vastly different than what has been encountered before, so let's get into the ins and outs of the area, and then we'll tackle how to beat Lieutenant Gray.
Lieutenant Gray's area is vast, but the main bulk of the fight only revolves around the train at the far end of the are from where the raid group starts. To trigger the fight against Lieutenant Gray two buttons on either side of the train have to be pushed. When pushed, he will have enemies that have giant shields coming out from the train and he will fall from a catwalk above the train onto the ground behind the shield enemies. For this fight, having high DPS builds will be necessary with an emphasis on having LMG and/or Rifle builds. A Bullet King is advisable to get because a constant stream of DPS is valuable here and there are ammo boxes on the left and right side of the map so running out of ammo shouldn't be a problem. There shouldn't be an issue with ammo if there is a constant stream of damage going on from all players helping to carry the load.
There are a couple of ways to take care of this fight although to make life easy, it's best to have one or two players taking care of the spawns that come from the back area while the rest of the team takes care of the boss and his minions. It is possible to do this without having players on the back and everyone at the front but it makes life a bit easier. Having a skill build or two can help this as well with some turrets, seekers, etc.. helping the cause to keep the numbers down. When the enemies first appear, they will be immune for a few seconds, but when they do unleash hell. If the team is good, getting him to about half or down to either two armor bars and health should be possible, although there's a catch to it. When the boss appears, above where his armor bar shows, there is a symbol and three shields under it. Each shield represents one of the shield enemies protecting the boss, and they all represent the blue bonus armor bar Gray has. Kill an enemy with a shield, and the boss will take more damage. The more shields are up, the less damage he takes. Also, the shields have a very annoying habit of getting in the way of whoever is doing the most damage so position-wise, players need to be on the right, left, and middle, surrounding the group, and when openings occur, lay into them. To top it all off, some enemies will drop mortar rounds on the team as well so make a break for it if a red eye is on your screen. This is the cue that the mortar shell is coming and to dive out of the way.
So now that we have the main idea of how to take Gray down, we need to look at how to make it efficient. With players surrounding the enemies shooting at the group at all times, getting up close and personal can be done as there's not much fire coming from them except for the boss. Getting up close allows for openings to get a large amount of damage with a Bullet King done. The reason why we're recommending the Bullet King is that the boss uses a chem launcher to heal himself and his shield team up as well. The Bullet King also out damages the heal if enough players are hitting him at the same time. There is a bit of timing needed to make life easier though and that's when it comes to killing the shield enemies. Prepare them by dropping their health to the lowest possible amounts and then take two or all three of them down at the same time. The reason for this is that when they drop, a small window for tremendous damage will appear before new shield enemies appear. There is a non-stop stream of shields that pop up when they die, so use that knowledge to time the attacks to do maximum damage. A word of caution is that if the fight takes too long, the enemies with shields will drop them and charge the players doing one-shot type damage to players. This can be identified by the white skull in an orange background that will appear over their health bars. Also, this has a possibility of occurring the closer the team gets to Gray's health bar. Also, at around two armor bars, he will bring out his chem launcher and heal himself and his team's bonus armor bar to full as often as he can.
Division 2 is available for PS4, Xbox One, Google Stadia, and PC
