Pokémon Sword & Shield Players Can Get a Free Shiny Using This Code
Players of Pokémon Sword and Shield can get a free shiny Amoonguss using a temporary code right now through the morning of August 10. For those quick enough to snag it, using the code will grant players a rare variation of a useful Pokémon.
The code was revealed by Pokémon Korea during their Trainer's Cup stream. Shiny Pokémon are alternate colored versions of the cute creatures, originally introduced during Generation II, and they're widely coveted for their historically low spawn rates. From Generations II through V, shiny Pokemon had a base spawn rate of 1 in 8192, although these odds were (slightly) increased in Generation VI, with the spawn rate now being 1 in 4096. This is the second event based around shiny pokémon this week, coming just days after the odds for encountering a shiny Pikachu were briefly boosted.
Earlier today, Serebii.net, a fan-made database for all things Pokémon, tweeted the code "TRA1NERSCUP," as well as a link further detailing the Pokémon. According to the database, the code grants players a level 50 Amoonguss with a moveset consisting of Clear Smog, Spore, Protect and Rage Powder. This was the moveset used during the 2019 World Championships by World Champion senior top four player, Baik Jongyoon. The shiny Amoonguss will also boast max IVs (the Pokémon equivalent of genes that are instrumental in determining the stats of a Pokémon) in every category except attack and speed.
Amoonguss was originally introduced in Generation V, and was already a valuable support piece for teams in Pokémon Sword and Shield thanks to its relevant move set in the metagame. The shiny variation is just a special bonus for trainers who redeem the code before tomorrow morning, and continues the trend of newer Pokémon games making it easier to encounter shiny Pokémon, thanks to various events and raids in both Pokémon Sword and Shield and Pokémon GO.
After being notoriously difficult to encounter for most of the series, shiny Pokémon appear to be becoming easier and easier to encounter, much to the joy of trainers everywhere who previously would've had to spend countless hours of shiny hunting, only to be rewarded with a slightly off-color Bidoof as opposed to something far more useful and cool like shiny Charizard.
Pokémon Sword and Shield are available now on Nintendo Switch.
