COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH)– An officer involved shooting in Weinland Park is being investigated by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, according to the Columbus Division of Police.
According to Columbus Police, SWAT officers were dispatched to the area on a report of a man with a gun around 9 a.m. CPD said when officers arrive, they located the man, and he fled in a car and attempted to harm the officers.
Police spokesman St. James Fuqua says at least one shot was fired by police.
Sgt. Fuqua says the suspect then fled on foot. “He ran across Weinland Park where there were kids playing, Fuqua said. “There’s a daycare. They had to put the daycare on lockdown because the suspect was knowingly running away and had already been involved having a weapon.”
The suspect then forced his way into a house on North Fourth Street. Officers followed him in and were able to arrest the suspect with no further incident according to police.
Sgt. Fuqua said the suspect will be charged with multiple felonies. “This spanned over several blocks. It went through a park in broad daylight with kids. There could have been so many areas where people could have been really hurt.”
Because of a recent policy change, all officer-involved shootings in the City of Columbus are now investigated by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
