Justice League Actor Campaigns For Spider-Man 4 With Tobey Maguire
Ray Porter, who plays Darkseid in Zack Snyder's Justice League, is campaigning to bring back Tobey Maguire for Spider-Man 4. It's been 13 years since Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy wrapped up, but some fans are still holding out hope that another installment in the franchise will come to fruition.
Long before the MCU and DCEU dominated the comic book movie space, several character-focused franchises thrived including Raimi's take on the web-slinging hero. The first two entries in the series continue to be well-beloved, with Spider-Man 2 regarded as one of the best superhero movies of all time. Unfortunately, 2007's Spider-Man 3 didn't meet the bar its prequels had set as its narrative got too murky for people to enjoy. Nevertheless, a group of fans is hoping that Sony is willing to bring back Maguire to continue the story of his Spider-Man via a fourth film.
Shared by The Ayer Cut — a fan account that requests Warner Bros. released director David Ayer's version of 2017's Suicide Squad — is a video of Porter asking Sony to get Maguire back for Spider-Man 4. According to the tweet, the video was made on behalf of a separate Twitter profile, Spider-Man 4 Campaign which pushes the idea. Watch the clip below:
Porter fully knows the power of fan movement as he benefitted from it himself. The actor was initially cast as Darkseid in Snyder's original vision for Justice League but after the director had to step away from the project, his part was left on the cutting room floor. Shortly after the film's theatrical cut was rolled out, fans quickly banded together to demand that Warner Bros. release the so-called Snyder Cut; they were able to sustain that movement for more than two years until it was announced in May that they'll finally get what they want through HBO Max. Since Justice League is also being reformatted to a four-part mini-series, Porter's Darkseid, who was supposed to be the main villain for the scrapped sequels, will more likely be featured more heavily than originally planned. It's curious if he will partake in it, but Snyder and some cast members are currently busy doing reshoots for Justice League.
It's worth noting, however, that Sony has not mentioned any plans for a Spider-Man 4 film since they're currently in collaboration with Marvel Studios for Tom Holland's version of the character. They're also busy building a villain-centric franchise that could one day feature the web-slinging hero. That said, it doesn't mean that Maguire can no longer be back as Spider-Man. In the last few weeks, many have theorized that Marvel Studios and Sony are building a live-action Spider-Verse via Spider-Man 3 where both Maguire and Andrew Garfield could eventually pop up.
