10 More Horror Movies To Watch If You Love Us | ScreenRant
Jordan Peele’s sophomore movie has already become nightmarishly overlooked compared to its predecessor, but Us is many things besides just being Jordan Peele’s follow up to Get Out. It’s a shocking home invasion movie, a social commentary on class, and a satire on American culture all wrapped up in one big Twilight Zone affair.
With the movie encompassing so many different qualities, it leaves so many movies it has been influenced by for fans to feast on. Whether it’s an Austrian home invasion movie or a Kubrick classic, there are so many similar movies just waiting to be discovered.
10 Hereditary (2018)
When it comes to straight up horror movies full of jump scares, slow and terrifying pacing, and screams around every corner, look no further than Hereditary. As both Hereditary and Us follow female leads who have gotten their families in to quite a bit of bother. Not only is Toni Collette the catalyst for most of the shock value in the movie, but she does just as good of a job as Lupita Nyong’o in bringing soul crushing emotion into the fold.
9 Sinister (2012)
Sinister is easily the scariest movie of 2012. It’s filled with jump scares and cliched horror tropes, but it will leave people questioning what’s real and what’s not. Like Us, Sinister is a great popcorn movie and it will keep viewers on the edge of their seats and half covering their eyes at all times.
8 The Lost Boys (1987)
There’s very little in common thematically between Us and the horror comedy The Lost Boys, which is about a town riddled with vampires. However it’s similar looking aesthetically and was clearly a big influence on Peele and his home invasion movie. Like Us, The Lost Boys takes place on the Santa Cruz boardwalk, and there’s even a reference to the movie in Us. The vampire flick has a killer soundtrack too.
7 Funny Games (1997)
Peele has outright said that Funny Games was one of the biggest inspirations for Us, as it’s one of the movies the director requested Lupita Nyong’o watch to prepare for the role. It’s an Austrian home invasion movie directed by Michael Haneke in which most of the violence is off screen. However, as all of the sounds of the violence are present, it sends audiences’ imaginations running wild making it much more terrifying than if the gore was on screen.
6 Scream (1996)
It might not be the first movie that screams comparisons to Us, but Scream is one of the best home invasion horror movies of all time. There might be some things about the franchise that have aged poorly, but it’s influential use of satire is something that Peele has used in all of his work, regardless of what genre he’s working in. The movie is also one of the most suspenseful films of the 90s, especially towards it’s final minutes.
5 Split (2016)
With Split reintroducing M. Night Shyamalan to the world with the semi-sequel to Unbreakable. Split and Us both share DNA. Though one is supernatural and the other is more scientific, their main characters have dual personalities.
James McAvoy turns in a career best performance as Kevin Crumb who has not just 2, but 24 different personalities. Just like with Lupita Nyong’o, the movie could have absolutely collapsed if there was a lesser lead actor behind the wheel. It also features one of the best movie plot twists of the decade.
4 Silence of the Lambs (1991)
As Us is essentially one big manhunt, what better manhunt in cinema history is there than Silence of the Lambs? Though there have been many different takes on Hannibal Lector, Anthony Hopkins embodies the cannibal, one of cinema’s smartest villains, better than any other actor. To this day, the movie remains one of the most chilling films ever made, and Hannibal causes as much chaos as The Tethered do in Us.
3 The Invisible Man (2020)
With Lupita Nyong’o wowing audiences in the lead role (or even the two lead roles) in Us, further cementing herself as one of the greatest actresses of the century, Elizabeth Moss delivers an amazing performance in this year’s The Invisible Man. The movie gives a wild update to the classic character, as Moss finds herself at the mercy of an abusive ex-boyfriend, turning the b-movie into a parable for how people can be manipulated and abused in relationships.
2 The Visit (2015)
Being the precursor to Split, his return to form, The Visit is Shyamalan stripping things back to basics and leaning in to more classic horror tropes. Though Shyamalan’s The Happening could just as easily be on the list as it’s an allegory for humans destroying the environment, not all movies need to teach a lesson in order to be compared to Us.
The Visit is somewhat of a home invasion movie too, and just like Us, some of the characters are hiding some huge secrets, leading to a very Shyamalan-type plot twist and making it one of the most underrated movies of the decade.
1 Parasite (2019)
With Us’ social commentary on classism, it shares so many themes with Parasite. Though Us is more supernatural, Parasite’s thrilling scenes are just as grotesque and blood filled as Peele’s sophomore effort. As director Bong Joon-Ho has tons of well-crafted movies, Parasite is quite a feet as it’s the best Joon-Ho film according to IMDB, and it even won the Academy Award for Best Directing.
