A WOMEN’S Institute member was found dead at home as police launch a murder probe.
Angela Webber, 75, suffered serious injuries at around 3am in her cottage in the sleepy village of Dunster, Somerset, on Thursday morning.
The mum-of-one and parish councillor was well liked in the village and had been a regular at WI coffee mornings and had joined a campaign for better paving.
A neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said: “It has just come as the biggest shock. It’s unbelievable.
“I spoke to her husband Hugh just a couple of days ago, and they were alright then.
“I know them very well. I just can’t imagine what has happened.
“Nothing ever happens around here, you just really wouldn’t expect this. It’s shocking.”
The woman added: “She was such a nice, chatty lady. “When we had street parties around here, she would always be going round handing out the leaflets.”
A man in his 70s has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.
Police say a post-mortem will be carried out and formal identification has not yet taken place.
Detective Inspector Neil Meade said: “This is a serious incident, which has tragically led to the death of a woman.
”Her family have been informed and are receiving support from specially trained officers.

“Although our investigation is at an early stage, we believe at this time it is an isolated incident.
“Nevertheless, additional patrols will be carried out in the area over the coming days and I’d urge anyone with concerns about what happened to speak to officers, who will be able to provide any advice necessary.”
