10 Best Horror Movie Houses, Ranked | ScreenRant
It appears perfectly on the outside, welcoming even. Yet, as the new homeowner begins to settle into their house, strange things begin to occur. Serial killers, ghosts, demons, and all sorts of things going bump in the night occupy and haunt some of the best horror movie houses out there.
Over the decades, horror movie houses have come and gone, some serving only as a brief memory, whereas others have become iconic among horror fans and still strike terror and fear in the hearts of even the bravest 0f audiences and the most efficient and ruthless of real estate agents.
10 The House On Haunted Hill
Back in 2018, audiences came to know the tv show Haunting Of Hill House as one of the best horror series out there and acknowledge that Hill House is a truly horrifying home. However, before there was Hill House, there was The House On Haunted Hill.
This version of Hill House was quite the home to behold, trapping five people within its walls and tormenting them to evils unlike anything seen before. Coupled with the imposing look, the original Hill House was quite the spooky home.
9 Katie And Micah's Home
In recent years, found footage films have slowly evolved into quite the rage. Twisting the notion of being based on "true events" found footage began in the dark woods looking for a witch and leaped into the haunted home and the search for Paranormal Activity.
Of course, when a couple like Katie and Micah discovers a spooky ghost haunting them, their first thought isn't to run but to record the experience. Shown through a modern household, this spooky experience shows that if a ghost is in your home, leave.
8 Perron Home
There's a running theme in most horror movie houses where people just don't get the message and refuse to leave. So, when the Perrons, victims of The Conjuring film, discover that their home is haunted by the ghost of a witch, they are a little smarter than Katie and Micah.
Instead of just leaving their haunted home with it's winding passages and deadly basement, the Perrons call on the Warrens, two paranormal experts, to investigate along with plenty of scary moments within the series. What follows is one scary adventure through one haunted and twisted home.
7 Cabin In The Woods
As far back as anyone can remember, finding a spooky cabin in the woods usually means turn the other way and walk out of there. Now, if you're a horny teenager from the horror-comedy Cabin In The Woods, the spooky cabin looks quite inviting.
What makes this cabin in the woods so interesting is that it's not limited to just one evil. The teenagers actually choose the evil, selected by a group of dogged employees intent on stopping an ancient evil and release the evils of the spooky cabin themselves, all leading up to one of the best endings horror films.
6 Evil Dead Cabin
While in recent years Cabin In The Woods has become the cabin to avoid, there was another cabin before the horror-comedy that presented a greater evil. The now-classic horror flick Evil Dead, one of the top 80s creature features, has probably one of the more iconic houses in horror, with the creepy cabin in the woods.
After reading text from the Necronomicon, evil is unleashed on teenagers, causing the cabin to influence the teens. From laughing animals heads, bleeding walls, and, of course, the demons in the basement, this is definitely not a groovy weekend in one of many horror flicks to be set in the woods.
5 Haunted Mansion
The idea of living in a mansion sounds like an awesome idea on the surface... until the new owner discovers that the mansion is home to ghosts, ghouls, and Eddie Murphy. The Haunted Mansion, based on the classic Disney ride, has the makings of being a creepy home.
Chock full of different ghosts, each with their own motivations, The Haunted Mansion has a plethora of hidden passages, dark rooms, corridors, and secrets that add to the depth of the mansion and make it the spooky home that it is.
4 The Myers Residence
Everyone's seen a house like this. A white, picket-fenced home among thousands of others, sitting there in the dark, abandoned. Yet, if one was to look closer, they may see something, or rather, someone moving, and, if they're unlucky enough, the face of Micahel Myers.
Halloween, one of many great horror movies to be overshadowed by their sequels, has captivated viewers for years, with the home of Michael Myers, appearing normal from the outside, serving as a truly iconic horror home. An imposing, desolate home left barren following death and murder, the very idea of Myers lurking within sends shivers down anyone's spines.
3 MacNeil House
On the outside, it may look like a normal home, but, on the inside, evil unlike anything seen before lurks. The MacNeil home, from one of the best horror movies ever made, The Exorcist, doesn't necessarily have ghosts or hidden passages, but the demon Pazzu makes up for that in a heartbeat.
From the two priests combatting the dark demon within the home to the very evil lurking in the walls exploiting some truly scary moments, the MacNeil home isn't one typical horror home but still remains one of the more iconic.
2 The Overlook Hotel
It can always be said that any place can be a home. As long as there are four walls and a roof over one's head, anyplace can be considered a house, and so can the Overlook Hotel, the haunted and isolated hotel that the characters in The Shining occupy.
Whether it be due to the spooky twins at the end 0f the hall, the endless maze, ghostly bartender, a bizarre bathroom ghost, or Jack Nicholson going nuts and spouting some of horror's most iconic quotes, the Overlook Hotel is one home most audiences wouldn't want to check into.
1 Freeling House
Most of the time, nothing can outdo the original, and, as far back as most audiences can remember, one of the first ghostly homes is the Poltergeist. What appears to be a safe home on the surface has a greater evil lying beneath.
In this case, the evil lying beneath is quite literal, with the Freeling's home built on top of an ancient burial ground. With reality changing mirrors, possessed TVs, clowns, and trees, the Freeling home has the worst of the worst when it comes to horror.
