Apex Legends Season 7 Trailer Shows Off Game's New Olympus Map
Respawn has finally offered a detailed look at Apex Legends’ new map, Olympus, in a dedicated gameplay trailer. The reveal comes shortly after the upcoming Season 7 was announced to introduce a new Legend, a genius astrophysicist Horizon.
The newest character coming to Apex Legends was revealed through a touching cinematic trailer full of Interstellar-inspired drama and time travel. Horizon, a talented scientist and a devoted citizen of her home planet, embarked on a dangerous journey to a black hole in an attempt to collect valuable resources needed to solve the energetic crisis back at Olympus. After an unforeseen betrayal, Horizon barely escaped the terrible fate of being sucked into the black hole, and she lost decades by doing so eventually jumping 87 years into the future armed with her new gravity-based abilities.
Respawn has shared the first gameplay trailer for Apex Legends Season 7 showcasing exciting footage of the anticipated new map, Olympus. The lush and beautiful scenery of the aerial city looks like a natural paradise with gorgeous environments and colorful surroundings taken straight from Titanfall. There’s seemingly going to be a lot of verticality to the map while the already fast-paced action will receive a boost with the introduction of the first drivable vehicle in the game. The addition of the Trident hovercar opens a whole new dimension for Rampart’s ultimate ability as players will be able to place her machine gun on top of the vehicle to shoot opponents on the go. That’s literally a turret on a car – and it looks amazing. The video ends with Wraith getting a taste of her own medicine as Horizon’s finisher animation sucks the psychic into a black hole, much like she loves doing herself when throwing enemies’ corpses into the void.
It is hard to overestimate the importance of adding a new playable map to Apex Legends. As a live-service game, the battle royale title relies on a steady flow of new content, one of the pillars of which is the development of new maps for players to stay engaged. To counter the potential fatigue from ageing content, Respawn regularly updates existing maps with altered areas, but introducing a brand new level is a much more efficient solution. Additionally, Olympus serves as yet another tool to expand the in-game lore and to enrich the backstories of the characters.
Olympus shows an obvious evolution in level design for Apex Legends. While the original map, Kings Canyon, was somewhat simplistic with its desolated wastelands, World’s Edge overwhelmed the community with much more detailed and elaborate environments. Olympus is a significant step further even compared to the second official map, and it is likely to become a new fan-favorite among Apex Legends players with its clear emphasis on verticality.
Apex Legends Season 7 launches on November 4 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC via Origin and Steam.
