Mets Claim Right-Handed Pitchers Nick Tropeano, Jacob Barnes Off Waivers
The Mets have claimed right-handed pitchers Nick Tropeano (Pirates) and Jacob Barnes (Angels) off waivers according to announcements from their former teams.
Tropeano, 30, pitched well in 2020 with a 1.15 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 15 2/3 innings for the Pirates as a reliever. The former Astros draft pick was born in West Islip, New York and went to college at Stony Brook.
He is arbitration eligible this offseason, under team control through the 2022 season, and had $1.075 million salary in 2020.
Tropeano uses a mainly four-year arsenal that includes a slider, four-seamer, changeup, and a splitter. He threw the slider more than any other pitch in 2020, at 31% and it was his most effective pitch holding opponents to .077 average.
Barnes, 30, posted a 5.50 ERA in 18 innings for the Angels during the 2020 season, though he did have 24 strikeouts compared to only four walks. He is also arbitration eligible this offseason and under team control through the 2022 season.
The former Brewers draft pick threw a cutter 52% of the time last season and a four-seamer 46% of the time.
