Acting Quickly, Mets New Owner Issues Positive First Directives
A scant moments after everything was signed, sealed and delivered, officially making Steve Cohen the majority owner of the New York Mets, came an indication on just how things will be run in Flushing from now on. Cohen, in a statement, issued moves that will have a positive impact in the community around Citi Field, help Mets employees, and offer relief to small businesses.
Here is the statement in full released Friday afternoon from Cohen, followed by comments:
Obviously, the first directives concern charity and giving, certainly a positive first step. It was met with delight in social media and gives a clear indication of the priorities Cohen has.
First, it is essential that employees of any firm are well taken care of. The reversal of the 5-30% cut can only bolster the enthusiasm level for staff. It was short-sided by previous ownership to make these cuts, and it is nice to see it changed.
Next, the seasonal relief fund can only be seen as a further boost to employee stability and morale. A $2.5 million commitment is no small fund. The Mets have been criticized in the past about their lack of continuity and direction. Mr. Cohen’s moves here can only be the start of fixing this perception, but it is a positive start.
Giving to the community is wonderful at any time. During a pandemic, in a city that has been largely been decimated, is particularly nice. The funds earmarked for the areas around Citi Field certainly will help. To make Citi Field and its environs a destination location will only serve to help attendance and excitement in Queens.
It’s been said time and time again that you only have one chance to make a first impression. The first impression made by the Mets’ new owner has largely been seen as positive and can only portend to even better news coming out of Flushing in the near future. What we learned today is that Cohen is committed to staff, small business, and Flushing.
He cares.
One can only wonder if the previous owner could be described using the same words.
