How Twitter Responded To LG Phones Closure: Best Memes & Memories
LG announced today that it's officially done making smartphones, and while that's a serious loss for the Android world, the news also resulted in some light-hearted memes and fond memories on Twitter. Because if there's one way to deal with loss, it's through social media.
Rumors of LG exiting the mobile tech world have been circulating for some time, and for anyone that regularly followed the company over the past few years, none of this should come as a surprise. LG's mobile division is expected to have lost over $4.5 billion over the past five years, and with no signs of those losses stopping any time soon, LG made the decision to call it quits. The company initially tried seeking out a buyer to carry on its legacy, but after failing to find an interested party, LG Mobile is now being laid to rest for good.
LG made the announcement on April 5, 2021, confirming that the company is now in the process of shuttering all of its smartphone operations. Warranty and software support will continue for the time being, but LG expects LG Mobile as it stands today to be completely shut down and gone by July 31 — resulting in one less major competitor in the smartphone market.
Given how much weight and history LG has carried in the smartphone world, a lot of users were quick to respond with their own takes on the news — whether it be through fond memories of LG or with witty remarks. Starting with the sentimental stuff first, one user shared a series of dog pictures they took from their LG G4 — saying they were "literally the first photos from the camera" they took. The photos hold up incredibly well considering the G4 was released back in 2015, and any excuse to look at dogs is a good one.
On a similar note, Alex Dobie created an excellent thread highlighting some of his favorite photos from various LG phones over the years. There are photo samples from the LG G4, G5, V30, and others — providing a great look back at LG's camera progress. While the company more recently took a back seat to the likes of Apple, Google, and others, camera performance (clearly) used to be a strong suit of LG's.
Another user shared their thoughts on the LG G5, which continues to stand out as one of the wildest smartphones LG has ever released. The big draw to the G5 was its modular design, and while the concept never took off, @rbrome's photos of the phone do an excellent job of showcasing what LG thought would be the future of smartphones.
Taking a look at some snarkier takes, Derrek Lee showed off his LG love with a family photo of the LG V30, G5, and G6 all next to each other. The G5 and G6 aren't too thrilled about the V30 being there, but that's just how family reunions go.
For all the things LG should be commended for, it's also important to remember its missteps. LG has regularly struggled with delivering timely Android updates to its devices, often delaying them by months and months. As such, the company's promise to still issue an Android 12 update to select phones — even after its mobile business is gone — didn't exactly sit right with some people.
While LG may have lost some of its dominance and luster in the past few years, that's not to say its absence from the smartphone world won't be felt. LG had its ups, downs, and so-so moments, and now the brand will live on through timeless memories. Cheers, LG.
