Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 Trailer Teases Devastating New Threat
The first trailer for Star Trek: Discovery season 4 has arrived, and it gives a thrilling peek at what's to come for the crew of the titular ship. The very first Star Trek series from CBS All Access (now Paramount+) is still going strong, largely thanks to the massive timeline change that took place after its sophomore run. Star Trek: Discovery season 3 saw Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and her crew reach the 32nd century, a stretch of time previously unexplored within the Star Trek franchise. There, Burnham and the others had to contend with a world without the Federation and learn the truth behind the Burn, the mysterious event responsible for its collapse.
Star Trek: Discovery season 3 only just concluded earlier this year, but work is already well underway on season 4. The hiatus ahead of season 3 was longer than normal due to the coronavirus pandemic, which also waylaid fellow Paramount+ series Star Trek: Picard. Thankfully, this time Discovery didn't end on a major cliffhanger, but instead a positive development. Burham is now captain of the USS Discovery, a move that has seemingly been seasons in the making. Hopefully she's settled into her new role by the time Star Trek: Discovery season 4 premieres, because there's a new threat ahead.
Following the "Women In Motion" panel during Paramount+'s First Contact Day event, Martin-Green introduced the very first trailer for Star Trek: Discovery season 4. The minute-and-a-half-long clip throws viewers right into the action, as Discovery and the budding Federation must content with a strange, unique threat: A devastating gravitational anomaly. Most interestingly, the clip says season 4 will arrive later this year instead of 2022. Check out the trailer down below.
Star Trek: Discovery showrunner Alex Kurtzman previously revealed the season 4 villain wouldn't be a living, breathing entity, but something far different. As the above trailer reveals, it's actually a force that stretches "five lightyears across," per Anthony Rapp's Stamets. The trailer gives a quick glimpse of the kind of destruction this anomaly can cause, and it's a chilling sight. To combat it, Burnham and the Discovery crew will have to work with many others outside of their ship.
It's that thread that actually seems to be the most promising thing about Star Trek: Discovery season 4. A criticism often lobbed at the newer pieces of Trek content is that they have moved beyond the core franchise messages of exploration and unity. However, with the Federation building itself back up again in season 4, Discovery already promises to tell a story of people banding together in the face of an inexplicable catastrophe. This early look at Discovery season 4 looks promising, and it will be interesting to see where it goes.
