Valheim Is Basically Skyrim As a Survival Game In New VR Mod
A Valheim modder has created an experimental VR mod that basically turns the survival title into Skyrim by enabling virtual reality support. The game’s modding community is in constant search of solutions to improve the game and make it more user-friendly, suggesting useful ideas that might very well end up as official updates in the future.
Valheim Plus, one of the numerous mods available for the game, enables a variety of advanced features and handy mechanics. The changes included in the package introduce much-needed quality-of-life improvements to virtually all the major aspects of Valheim. For instance, the mod cleverly modifies a number of vital character parameters, adjusts the camera, and updates the existing HUD to include additional information.
On NexusMods, a talented user manicmoose99 has shared an intriguing solution called VHVR, which allows running Valheim in virtual reality with a first-person view. The new camera perspective makes fighting and exploring much more immersive and believable, not to mention that diving into virtual reality creates a sense of actual presence in the game. For now, this is an experimental mod, but even in its early and rough implementation, it feels like playing Skyrim rather than Valheim. The similarity between the two games is quite obvious as both the titles are deeply influenced by Norse mythology. Additionally, the games share a lot of common in visual design and even combat systems. That being said, there’re some specific requirements and limitations when running the mod, including the necessity to install BepInExPack, a popular framework for mod support in Unity-based video games. On top of that, several in-game options need to be tweaked in order to run VHVR successfully. If all the requirements are met correctly, the result must be an immersive virtual reality experience, as demonstrated in a YouTube video below.
Improving and enriching such a brilliant game as Valheim has already become a new favorite for talented modders who regularly share their inventions with the fan community. One of the more functional solutions for the title is the mod called Equipment and Quick Slots, which basically improves inventory management. One of the most satisfying additions is the introduction of separate quick slots that can be bound to hotkeys. The mod also fixes some existing mechanics, such as placing equipped items in inventory rather than dedicated slots.
Although Valheim in virtual reality is something fans of the game would definitely appreciate, even a simple first-person view solution could make all the difference. It’s quite surprising that developers did not provide players with an option to change camera perspective in the game, especially considering how much more immersive and natural the gameplay becomes when switching from the third-person view. Hopefully, this is something the team would consider implementing with future updates, as the title is still in Early Access. An official VR support should not be ruled out either if there happens to be a reasonable demand from the community.
Valheim is available on PC via Steam Early Access.
