Signature Easter candy brand, Peeps, is making its way from the grocery aisle to the big screen in its own animated feature. The sugar-coated, marshmallow treats originated in 1953 from Just Born Inc. in the form of chicks. Years later, the company expanded to bunnies. Eventually, the company developed different marshmallow animals and symbols for other holidays like Halloween, Christmas and Valentine's Day.
Deadline confirmed that a Peeps animated feature film is in the works. Wonder Street has obtained the film/TV rights to Peeps. Christine and Mark Holder will produce the film from Wonder Street. The Holder production team was also behind The Mauritanian. The untitled animated feature will follow a ragtag group of Peeps characters who set on a cross-country journey in order to attend Peepsfest, an annual brand celebration in Pennsylvania.The screenplay will be written by David Goldblum, and the upcoming animated feature is being marketed as Trollsmeets Smurfs. Keith Domalewski, Director of Marketing & Consumer Engagement at Just Born is excited about the collaborative project, saying:
Peeps Chicks and Bunnies have been ingrained in American pop culture for nearly seven decades due to their instantly-recognizable shapes and fan-favorite Marshmallow taste, making them the perfect characters to bring to life on the big screen.
The Peeps animated feature is a unique concept. Plenty of popular products like Barbie dolls, Angry Birds games and LEGO toys have also gotten their own feature films in recent years. However, a full-length feature based on a candy line is a new feat. While candies may typically be hard to personify, Peeps could easily be made into characters with their animal shapes. Additionally, Peeps has formed its own legacy over the years. Love them or hate them, the marshmallow candies will make for adorable movie stars.
