The global COVID-19 pandemic continues to permeate virtually every aspect of society and daily life, including government, business, travel, education, and especially the health care system. With more than 120 million cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection worldwide, including nearly 30 million cases in the US, and with more than 2.5 million deaths worldwide, including more than 500 000 deaths in the US, health care systems, hospitals, physicians, other health care professionals, and researchers worldwide have been challenged like never before, not only to care for overwhelming numbers of severely ill patients with COVID-19, but also to simultaneously develop effective approaches to identify, treat, and prevent this devastating disease.
