KUWTK: Kim Kardashian Explains How Her Met Gala Look Fit The Theme
Kim Kardashian from Keeping Up With the Kardashians explained how her incognito Met Gala ensemble perfectly represented the fashion extravaganza's theme. The 40-year-old reality star wore an all-black Balenciaga outfit that included a face covering, body-hugging T-shirt dress, catsuit, and jersey boots. Kim arrived to the carpet alongside another man dressed in a similar risqué fashion. Despite fans' belief that the man behind the mask could be Kanye West, it was confirmed that the man's identity was none other than designer Demna Gvasalia, who is the creative director of Balenciaga.
Though Kanye wasn't in attendance for this year's America-themed occasion, his presence was felt on the carpet through his soon-to-be ex-wife's attire. Kanye reportedly made the introduction between Kim and the designer, as well as encouraged Kim to break out of her comfort zone to inspire others to push and break creative boundaries through their art. As for the event itself, the Met Gala is the art and fashion world's premiere charity event that annually takes place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. While other years have seen themes such as Camp, Heavenly Bodies, and China, this year's theme was a bit more local. Andrew Bolton, The Costume Institute's Wendy You Curator in Charge centered this year's carpet around the question of who gets to be American. The inspiration was drawn from a red, white, and blue silk sash from Prabal Gurung's tenth-anniversary collection.
Sharing more behind-the-scenes moments of her fashion get-up, Kim explained why her all-black polarizing look matched the American theme. "What's more American than a T-shirt head to toe?!" Kim captioned her Instagram post. The look mirrored the Balenciaga bodysuit Kim wore while supporting Kanye at the second listening event for his new album, Donda. Kim used this fashion moment to make a statement that even without a logo or a face, everyone still knows when she arrives.
While many fans celebrated the outlandish appearance, others compared it to The Sims' Grim Reaper. In a tweet from habitbells, the user compares Kim's Met Gala outfit to Death turning up to collect a body in the video game. Shortly after the debut of the jarring look, Kim kept the all-black, covered-up theme going for the event's after-parties. This time, Kim channeled Batwoman, wearing black leggings that covered her shoes and a long-sleeve black dress over another long black train. The only difference this time around is Kim swapped the face mask for large, flared-out black sunglasses.
Kim has a point that nothing is more American fashion than just a normal black t-shirt. Americans wear black t-shirts all day long, from going to work to hanging with friends to a dinner night out to getting tucked into bed. That said, is a black t-shirt enough for Keeping Up With The Kardashians fans to accept Kim's ensemble as the perfect Met Gala choice?
