GTA 6 Easter Egg Possibly Spotted In GTA 5 Upgrade Trailer
A keen-eyed fan spotted an interesting detail in the latest Grand Theft Auto 5 upgrade trailer, and it could be a tease for Grand Theft Auto 6's setting. Originally released in 2013 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, GTA 5 has received several rereleases since, with the latest, current-gen console upgrade for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S expected to arrive in March 2022.
The GTA 5 upgrade trailer received an overwhelmingly negative response from fans. Much of their dissatisfaction stemmed from the graphical improvements boasted in the trailer, which did not seem significant in comparison to other offerings on the current-gen consoles and looked underwhelming when compared to the PC version of GTA 5. The trailer was ratioed on YouTube, with the PS5 version's trailer quickly becoming one of the most disliked uploads on PlayStation’s channel at the time of writing, at 162,000 dislikes.
During the trailer, one of the game’s protagonists, Franklin, can be seen driving down the highway in a sports car with a license plate that reads "61SAL890." Reddit user docbicep interpreted this to mean "6 is a late 90s," suggesting GTA 6’s setting will be some time in the late 1990s. While this may seem like quite a stretch, Rockstar has previously hidden Easter eggs in games that teased future projects. It's rather unlikely, but it is still theoretically possible this was a deliberate tease from the company. Most other Reddit users in the comments, however, were unconvinced. The top comment, by user mvreee, has more upvotes than the post itself, joking that the plate actually means GTA 6 "will be released in late 2090." Another, from user Scotthawk, said, "Yup, enough of Reddit for today."
While Rockstar continues to remain tight-lipped about the next installment of the GTA franchise, some fans' patience has started to grow thin. One GTA 6 fan crashed live TV to ask for the game’s release, sneaking onto a live broadcast of the popular German game show Schlag den star and requesting the host’s help in asking Rockstar where GTA 6 was. Mere days later, another fan attempted to garner the developer’s attention by holding up a sign at a AEW Dynamite match, asking Rockstar to announce GTA 6.
With the lack of official news from Rockstar, it’s understandable that fans are looking high and low for hints. Considering Vice City's '80s theme set it apart from other games in the series and that '90s nostalgia is at an all time high, it could make sense for Rockstar to consider a non-current time period for Grand Theft Auto 6's setting.
