Marvel Didn't Tell Kit Harington If His Eternals Character Was Dusted
Eternals star, Kit Harington has revealed that wasn't told whether or not his character survived Thanos' snap, following the events of Avengers: Infinity War. Harington stars as Dane Whitman in the MCU's latest installment, the highly-anticipated Eternals that is set for release soon. The film, directed by Chloé Zhao boasts an impressive all-star cast, alongside Harington, that includes the likes of Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, and Gemma Chan. In the comics, Harington's character goes on to adopt the superhero alias of Black Knight, something that many fans are hoping to also see play out on the big screen.
Initially set for release in 2020, Eternals marks the 26th installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is set to be an incredibly important story within the Phase 4 schedule. The film takes place eight months on from the events of Avengers: Endgame, in the summer of 2024, with Hulk's snap actually acting as a catalyst for the emergence of this new line-up of heroes. Hulk's snap in Endgame counteracted the impact of Thanos' snap at the end of Infinity War, which saw half of the universe's population reduced to dust, including a number of MCU heroes.
Now, Harington has addressed whether or not his character, Dane Whitman was one of the many victims of the 'blip'. Speaking to The Playlist, the Game of Thrones star was asked whether Marvel had told him whether his character had been dusted by Thanos' snap or whether he had been on Earth during that time. Harington revealed that they actually hadn't told him, before joking that he should have asked them himself. The actor went on to provide his own theory for what happened to the character, saying "I reckon he was there, he stayed." Check out Harington's full quote below.
They didn’t actually, and I never asked. That’s bad acting of me. That’s bad preparation. [Laughs.] I reckon he wasn’t. I reckon he was there, he stayed. That’s the decision I’m making now.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe's timeline means that many stories take place at the same time, with Eternals itself set to happen around the same time as the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home. This somewhat complex chronology often sparks questions about which characters within the MCU would have survived the snap, hence why it's certainly curious as to whether or not Harington's character would have been dusted. These theories sometimes spill outside of the realms of the MCU, with the recent release of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings supposedly 'confirming' that singer Lil Nas X was not dusted by Thanos.
Since Harington has confirmed that Marvel did not divulge any information on his character's fate within the events of the previous films, that certainly makes it fair to say that it is unlikely to have any relevance to the character of Dane Whitman when it comes to his role within the MCU. What remains to be seen is how the snap will play into the events of the film, and whether audiences will discover if any of the other characters were impacted, since it is likely to still be fresh on their minds, having only occurred just eight months prior. As for now, audiences do not have long to wait to discover how the events of this newest installment unfold, as Eternals hit theaters on November 5.
