ANAHEIM — The real Trevor Zegras stood up on Tuesday night, but the Ducks still snatched defeat from the jaws of victory by ceding two goals less than 20 seconds apart in the final 1:20 of a 4-3 loss to the Winnipeg Jets at Honda Center.
Zegras, considered a future franchise cornerstone, had just one point in his first six games, but he contributed a goal, an assist and some energetic defensive play on Tuesday.
“It’s one of those (games) that doesn’t really make sense right now,” Zegras said. “Up until that last two-minute mark, that was one of the better games we’ve had this season in terms of controlling the pace of the game.”
Winger Sonny Milano and defenseman Josh Manson also scored goals for the Ducks. Goaltender John Gibson made 21 saves.
Winger Evgeny Svechnikov, center Andrew Copp, winger Nikolaj Ehlers and center Paul Stastny scored for Winnipeg. Connor Hellebuyck was the busier goalie, making 32 saves to earn the victory.
With their goalie pulled, Winnipeg tied the score with 80 seconds left, when Ehlers took a shot from parallel to the goal line that beat Gibson to the far side. Just 19 seconds later, the Jets scored a goal set up by Ehlers and defenseman Neal Pionk that deflected in off Stastny’s skate.
“The one that tied it, that was a world-class shot. I’m not sure if you did that one 100 times you could put it in there more than once or twice,” Ducks coach Dallas Eakins said. “The other one is why we promote putting pucks to the net. It’s a broken play, there’s coverage, it hits somebody in the foot and goes into the net.”
With 7:45 left, Milano and Zegras combined for their second goal of the night resulting from heavy forechecking and a savvy pass that led to a quick shot. This time it was Milano creating a turnover behind the net and then finding a streaking Zegras in front for the go-ahead goal.
“We kind of think the same way. The second one I just kind of threw it in front,” Milano said. “The first one he made a good takeaway and found me backdoor.”
Winnipeg had drawn even at the 5:24 mark of the closing period. A tic-tac-toe passing sequence culminated in a swift shot and goal for Copp.
The Ducks took their first lead of the night 99 seconds into the third period. Manson flung a shot from the blue line that was deflected upon release. It whiffled toward the net and past Hellebuyck for Manson’s first goal of the season.
As Winnipeg defenseman Nate Schmidt had done to rookie center Benoit-Olivier Groulx in the first period, Copp denied Ducks defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk a prime scoring chance. Shattenkirk sneaked through the neutral zone to earn a partial breakaway that Copp thwarted at the last moment.
Copp later had a partial breakaway of his own, during a Ducks power play on which they failed to convert. He then took a penalty, which Winnipeg also killed.
Less than three minutes after the Ducks had fallen behind, they found their equalizer largely because of Zegras. He applied pressure on the forecheck and the Jets fumbled around in their own zone. Zegras collected a turnover, pivoted and moved the puck decisively to Milano for a one-timer.
“It was more just guys feeding off each other. I thought Sonny Milano played a great game tonight, kind of all over it on the forecheck,” Zegras said before praising Gibson’s play as well.
Just over two minutes into the second period, Winnipeg had opened the scoring with a counterattack. Winger Kyle Connor made a short pass to center Pierre-Luc Dubois, who found the trailing Svechnikov for a wrist shot from the low slot.
The first period ended scoreless, but the Ducks carried the play and generated opportunities on offense, out-shooting Winnipeg 13-6. Despite dictating tempo for much of the night, the Ducks came away with zero points in the standings.
“There will be teaching moments, for sure,” Eakins said. “I guess they’re good lessons, it just doesn’t feel like it right now.”
