WandaVision, Shang-Chi, & More Earn Marvel 21 People’s Choice Nominations
The People's Choice Awards nominees have been announced today, and MCU projects have garnered Marvel 21 nominations, sweeping almost every category for which they were eligible. After the pandemic shut down theaters shortly before Black Widow was scheduled to kick off Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, 2020 was the first year to be completely devoid of an MCU project since the franchise began. However, in 2021, Marvel came back with a vengeance.
Marvel has dominated the box office, with Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings breaking pandemic profit records and topping the domestic box office at #2 and #1, respectively. They are also both squarely in the top 10 worldwide at #7 and #8. On Disney+, Marvel has also launched a series of successful live-action streaming shows, beginning with WandaVision this January. The series was followed by The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki, with Hawkeye set to premiere this November.
Per Deadline, the nominees for NBC and E!'s People's Choice Awards have been released today. Black Widow, Shang-Chi, Loki, WandaVision, and Falcon & the Winter Soldier all managed to nab nominations. Some Marvel entries, like WandaVision and Loki, got four nominations each. Marvel has swept the list with 21 overall nominations between all of the MCU entries on the list.
Loki's four nominations include Show of 2021, Bingeworthy Show, and Sci-Fi/Fantasy Show, with a nomination for Male TV Star for Tom Hiddleston, who reprised the role he originated in 2011's Thor and continued playing through 5 other films. WandaVision was also nominated for Show of 2021 and Sci-Fi/Fantasy Show, with Female TV Star nominations going to Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff and Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier rounds out the Disney+ contributions with Sci-Fi/Fantasy Show, with a Male TV Star nod for Anthony Mackie.
On the film front, Black Widow and Shang-Chi were both nominated for Movie of 2021 and Action Movie of 2021. Black Widow stars Florence Pugh and Scarlett Johanssen, who played superspy sisters Natasha and Yelena, captured nominations for Female Movie Star and Action Movie Star. Shang-Chi's Simu Liu is also nominated in the latter category as well as Male Movie Star, and his co-star Awkwafina also joins the Female Movie Star category.
This vast swath of nominations proves that Phase 4 of the MCU has staying power beyond a shadow of a doubt. Despite a long delay and the loss of many key players from the original Avengers lineup, the Marvel films and television shows maintain their wide popularity and appeal. This is good news for the massive slate of sequels, spinoffs, and TV renewals already in the works, providing audiences with endless Marvel content through at least 2024.
