Zack Snyder Says His DC Movies Aren't SnyderVerse | Screen Rant
Zack Snyder doesn't see his DC movies as part of the SnyderVerse, instead opting to view his original movies in that light. When Warner Bros. first began its DC Extended Universe, Snyder was the closest thing it had to a primary architect. He directed the first two movies of the franchise, Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and was intended to be the director of its first major team-up movie, Justice League, before his unexpected departure midway through production. Following that, Snyder has largely stayed away from the DCEU as a director, though he's remained on as a producer for certain franchise installments.
Despite that, fans remain deeply attached to his DCEU contributions, and the release of his heavily-discussed director's cut of Justice League has led to renewed interest in what many have dubbed the "SnyderVerse." Snyder envisioned a 5-movie arc for the DCEU, but was only able to carry out the first three parts. Since the release of Justice League earlier this year, fans have repeatedly been calling on Warner Bros. to reinstate Snyder and give him the chance to continue his SnyderVerse.
However, if you were to ask Snyder his opinion, he wouldn't actually call his DCEU movies the SnyderVerse. In a new interview with Inverse for the Netflix movie Army of Thieves (which he produced), Snyder was asked about what he sees as the SnyderVerse. He admitted he hopes the SnyderVerse is his original IP and indicated the DCEU remains separate from that. Snyder said:
I would hope that anything Snyderverseian is [whatever] we’re doing as original IP. The DC universe is something that’s very close to my heart and something I spent a lot of time developing and thinking about, so I love it. But where I am right now is with the Rebel Moon of it all and the Army of the Dead of it all. They’re very much consuming our creative output. Hopefully, just anything that we’re doing that’s original and cool would fit into that category.
Snyder has quite a lot on his plate right now between the expanding Army of the Dead universe and Rebel Moon, but fans keep wanting him to return to the DCEU. Most recently, #RestoretheSnyderVerse trended ahead of DC FanDome in an attempt to gain attention for the movement. However, it does look like Snyder himself is content with building upon his original projects. He's spoken in the past about the likelihood of getting to finish his DC plans, which he doesn't see as ever happening. His decision to view his original projects as the true SnyderVerse is also quite telling about what he views as his priorities.
Of course, this is unlikely to stop Snyder's fans from viewing his DC plans as the SnyderVerse, if only because they remain separate from the current DCEU. The franchise is currently charging forward with long-awaited standalone movies and eagerly anticipated sequels, and it remains to be seen just how fully they will connect. The Restore the SnyderVerse movement doesn't seem to be going away just yet, though perhaps there might be a need for a name change. For the time being, Snyder sees his SnyderVerse as something completely different, so perhaps fans should take that into account.
