‘The really big guns’ – Sunderland manager aims dig at Tottenham and Arsenal

Sunderland manager Lee Johnson has aimed a dig at both Tottenham and Arsenal after steering his side into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup. 

The Black Cats, currently sat in a healthy fourth position in League One, overcame Championship outfit QPR via a penalty shootout to reach the last eight. 

The run sees Sunderland qualify for the quarter-finals of the competition for the first time since 2014 – the year they went all the way to the final at Wembley before falling to a 3-1 defeat to Manchester City. 

After seeing his side produce a scalp in West London, Johnson was quizzed on who he would like to face in the next round. 

He responded with either a visit to Tottenham or Arsenal, before revealing his intention to ‘wait for the really big guns’ should Sunderland qualify for the semi-finals. 

“I’d love to have Arsenal away or Tottenham away if not that,” Johnson told the club’s reporters. “And then we’ll wait for the really big guns when it’s two legs.”

This just about sums up the current state of both North London clubs, who have endured mixed spells of form in the Premier League this season.

If either side were to be drawn against Sunderland, though, no doubt Johnson’s comments would provide a team-talk ahead of the game.
