Not an Everton fan, but do you think the atmosphere at Goodison would’ve been what it was towards the end of the season had Rafa Benitez still been in charge? Or would the discontent and the frustrations on the terraces towards the manager, the board and team, which was ongoing for sometime, still have been evident?
It's definitely possible. Lampard did seem to help in changing the atmosphere. But he was brought in with 4 or 5 months to go. Not with 8 weeks left.
As I mention, at a certain point, the performances looked no better under Lampard then they did Benitez. So that's kind of my reasoning for sacking Powell now maybe not being that ideal. As there are still going to be underlying issues...
Everton - Losing big games in the last 10 minutes. And unable to defend set-pieces.
Wire - Losing big games in the last 10-20 minutes. And unable to defend the line.
We were still a very bad team even under Lampard. The main catalyst for the fight, sprit and desire to keep going was ultimately the fans getting behind the team.
Maybe putting someone else in charge would spur the team on to win the next few games to keep us up. And in doing so, will keep fans spirits up.
But since Everton fans were never exactly welcoming to Benitez, Wire fans were still somewhat excited about the prospect of Powell taking us to the next step with a rebuild, the board won't realistically remove Powell. He's still capable of getting us to score points, we just can't defend and we forfeit leads too easily. As much as the fight should come from the coach, it's just not happening, so from experience, it falls on us.
So either fans need to make a massive protest now to get Powell out, and not just say it on Forums and Social Media, but a full on protest to make it happen as the club probably won't at this stage. If fans aren't going to do that, then we do kind of need to put the complaining aside for now, just at the stadium, until we get through this mess.
