Rainfall slowed the now fatal McKinney Fire’s growth overnight as the conflagration scorched 55,493 acres — approximately 86 square miles — and remained 0% contained by Monday morning, according to U.S. Forest Service officials.
Weather on Sunday also favored the firefighters working to contain two other blazes in the area, the China 2 Fire and the Alex Fire. And the Forest Service said Monday that firefighters would continue taking advantage of the helpful conditions to build containment lines with awareness of the extremely dry vegetation surrounding them:
“The continued threat of thunderstorms and the associated strong, erratic winds could result in increased fire behavior. There have been numerous lightning strikes in the area in the last 48 hours, and at least 12 holdover fires have been detected on the Klamath National Forest, in addition to the ones listed above. They range in size from less than 1/10th acre to several acres. All are being fully suppressed.”
A holdover fire is one that remains dormant for a considerable time, according to the National Wildfire Coordinating Group.
The McKinney Fire erupted in a largely unpopulated area of Siskiyou County. Its cause remains under investigation.
