Video: Ex-Tottenham winger scores for new club in Championship opener

0

Former Tottenham winger Jack Clarke scored for Sunderland as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Coventry on their return to the Championship.

Clarke, who spent last season on loan with the Black Cats, made a permanent move to Wearside earlier this summer after helping the club secure promotion from League One.

His departure from Spurs came after he made just four first-team appearances in three years for the club (Transfermarkt) following his switch from Leeds in 2019.

Named in the starting line-up for Sunderland’s opening Championship game against Coventry, Clarke made an instant impact as he netted on their return to the second tier following a four-year absence.

The 21-year-old handed his side a lead against the Sky Blues after just 12 minutes, heading in a lofted cross at the far post to send the Stadium of Light into raptures.

But his effort was only enough to earn Sunderland a point as Coventry pegged them back to equalise with less than 10 minutes of time remaining.

It is a shame that Clarke didn’t progress at all at Spurs, but he never really came close to forcing his way into the line-up.

The move to Sunderland will have likely been the easiest decision for him to make with opportunities at Spurs coming at a big premium and it is good to see him score on their Championship return.
