Sports briefs: San Marin girls claim tournament title
The San Marin High girls basketball team’s defense was locked in over the course of the Maria Carrillo Invitational as the Mustangs allowed an average of 26 points over the final two games to claim the title.
Keeley Wright scored 13 points in a 44-25 win against Sonoma Valley in the final on Saturday en route to being named tournament MVP. Lailah Carey added 15 points against the Dragon and tied for the team lead in scoring on Friday with eight points in a 36-27 win against Eureka.
Cassie Rees was also named to the all-tournament team.
- Hannah Golan led three players in double figures as Branson (4-4) swept through the Windsor tournament with a 53-45 win against Miramonte on Saturday. Rosie Slayen got the Bulls off to a quick start, scoring eight of her 15 points in the first quarter. Isabella Arauz-Moore knocked down four 3-pointers en route to a 15-point game. Golan also pulled down 17 rebounds and came away with five steals against Miramonte. Golan (24 points) and Slayen (16 points) also led the way in a 52-37 win against San Leandro on Friday night. Slayen was named the tournament’s MVP while Golan was named to the all-tournament team.
- Gracyn Lovette scored 20 points to lead Marin Catholic as the Wildcats dropped a 63-58 game against Bishop O’Dowd on Saturday. Cecily Hadd hit four 3-pointers and scored 14 points in what coach Ashley Saia called her “best offensive game of the year.” Alyssa Spagnuolo and Madie Dayton added seven points apiece for MC (3-4).
Women’s basketball
Freshman Keyonee Neal enjoyed the best game of her career at Dominican University, scoring 19 points with seven rebounds and five assists to lead the Penguins to a 66-56 home win against Fresno Pacific on Saturday.
The Penguins (3-6, 1-2 PacWest) limited Fresno Pacific (4-5, 0-1) to 4-for-28 shooting from 3-point range. The Penguins led 40-33 at the break and controlled the game in the second half.
Olga Faasolo scored 13 points for the Penguins and Brittney Cedeno added 12.
- College of Marin fell 51-44 against San Mateo on Saturday. No further details were available at press time.
Men’s basketball
Garrett Siebels scored a game-high 19 points, leading a balanced attack as Dominican rolled to a 79-56 home win against Fresno Pacific on Saturday.
Seibels was followed closely on the score sheet by teammates Jaayden Bush (18 points) and P.J. Volz (17 points). The Penguins shot 52.6% from the floor and made 9 of 18 from 3-point range.
Girls soccer
Sabrina Hwang scored a second-half goal off a corner taken by Gaby Steele as Branson prevailed 1-0 against Archie Williams (3-2-0, 2-2-0 MCAL). The victory moves Branson (5-0-1, 3-0-1) into first place. The other three MCAL matchups on the day were all cancelled due to inclement weather.
- Saliah Johnson and Lucy Fredrickson netted goals as San Domenico continued its strong start to the season with a 2-0 victory over St. Vincent de Paul. The Panthers (3-1) are off to the best start in program history.
Boys soccer
Branson (1-3-2, 1-2-1) and Archie Williams (0-3-2, 0-3-1) braved the elements and battled to a 0-0 tie on Saturday. Bulls goalie Finn Dossey notched the shutout with help from a back four of Wiley Kendall, Bode Dossey, Rodrigo Diaz and Jaden Sher. The other MCAL contests were postponed.
