Journalist tells Spurs it would be ‘waste of time’ to try and sign midfielder in January
According to journalist Dean Jones for GiveMeSport, it would be a ‘waste of time’ for Tottenham Hotspur to pursue Barcelona’s Franck Kessie in the January transfer window.
The Ivory Coast international joined Barcelona in the summer on a free transfer after his contract with AC Milan expired. He has made 13 appearances for the Catalan club this season and scored one goal (Transfermarkt).
Tottenham were rumoured to be in the running to sign Kessie in the summer (MilanNews) before the 25-year-old opted for a move to the Nou Camp.
Things haven’t exactly gone to plan there, though, and speculation is mounting that the La Liga side may be open to selling Kessie to Spurs for just €10 million (£8.5 million) after signing him for nothing this summer (AS).
Apparently, Spurs are looking at a loan-to-buy deal for Kessie and find themselves at the front of the queue ahead of Inter Milan and Juventus (Sport).
The one stumbling block, however, is that Kessie is reportedly keen to stay at Barcelona and fight for his future (MundoDeportivo). Speaking to CalcioMercato (via BarcaBlaugranes), Kessie’s agent insisted the player ‘has never been as happy as he is now.’
Because of this, Dean Jones doesn’t see a move coming to fruition at this time and thinks Tottenham should wait until at least the summer before making an approach.
He said: “I think a cheeky bid for Kessie in January would probably be a waste of time, to be honest. He’s basically chasing a dream here. And I think he’ll give it the rest of the season before he even contemplates going anywhere else.”

I really cannot see Franck Kessie leaving Barcelona in the same season as he joined the Spanish side. He wants to play for Barca, he’s got his dream move, and he’s going to fight to make that work out. If, by the end of the season things aren’t looking up, then he may be more inclined to move on, but we should focus on other targets now.
