When University of Colorado football coach Karl Dorrell was fired in October, it created ambiguity for West Ranch senior quarterback Ryan Staub, who committed to play for the Buffs back in January.
Would he re-open his recruitment? Would he wait around to see who the next coach is?
Those questions, among many others, came to mind as he went on to throw for 3,008 yards and 37 touchdowns for the Wildcats.
But when Colorado announced Deion Sanders would be its new head coach a few weeks ago, Staub’s initial thoughts were laced with concern.
“When Deion was hired every commit was unsure of their future,” Staub said.
One of Sanders’ first actions was telling the players at Colorado to pretty much jump into the transfer portal.
“We got a few positions already taken care of because I’m bringing my luggage with me, and it’s Louie (Vuitton),” he told the team, alluding to Jackson State players following him to Colorado.
Multiple recruits already committed to Colorado were told their spot would no longer be there for them in Boulder. Simi Valley defensive end Carson Mott was one of those recruits.
“Just spoke to the new Colorado staff and was informed they would not be honoring my commitment,” Mott tweeted on Dec. 5. “I am officially re-opening my recruitment.”
Staub, however, is part of Sanders’ plan.
“For Deion to specifically included me in Colorado’s future was a huge honor,” Staub said.
“I met with coach Sanders in person when I took my official visit this past weekend (Dec. 9-11). We spoke, had good conversation. We talked about the future of the program and what it looked like for me. He told me to stay committed and he’s looking forward to seeing me in January.”
Staub will sign his letter of intent to Colorado on Wednesday (Dec. 21), graduate high school early and enroll at Colorado in January where he’ll be able to participate in Sanders’ first spring football session.
“Being there in January will be huge,” said Staub, who led West Ranch to the school’s first-ever Foothill League title this season. “I’ll be learning a new offensive system and be on pace with everyone from the beginning. It also gives me a chance to acclimate to college life and the strength and conditioning program.”
Staub is a 3-star rated QB, according to 247Sports.com with offers to Fresno State, Vanderbilt, Nevada and Arizona. He led West Ranch to an 11-1 record this past fall and was named the Foothill League Player of the Year.
