Mike Garafolo has some of the best sources in the NFL. That is especially true when it comes to the Chicago Bears. He’s broken several stories about them over the past few years. So it’s always interesting to hear what he has to say regarding the team. He had a chance to do that on The Sick Podcast with NFL Network colleague Adam Rank. They discussed the upcoming game against the Philadelphia Eagles and how the NFC powerhouse perfectly represents where the Bears want to go with their rebuild.
Quarterback Jalen Hurts was a focal point of their discussion. The giant leap he’s taken this season is largely thanks to the investments Philadelphia has made in the offense around him. They constructed a stout offensive line and then spent multiple high draft picks upgrading their receiving corps with DeVonta Smith and A.J. Brown. Now Hurts is the front-runner for the MVP award. Garafolo believes the Bears are going to attack the upcoming off-season in a similar fashion, spending significant resources trying to upgrade the offense around Justin Fields.
The Chicago Bears likely see their path to winning.
In years past, it was with the old formula of running the ball and playing great defense. Things have changed. Now they have a quarterback. Fields has established himself as the best player on the team. The only reason they’ve been in almost every game they’ve played this year is because of him. He’s done it with a supporting cast that won’t feature a single Pro Bowler. In fact, one could argue three or four of their current starters shouldn’t even be starters. There is zero star power on that side of the ball outside Fields.
It makes perfect sense for GM Ryan Poles to start upgrading. As much as he and head coach Matt Eberflus may want to repair the defense, fortifying the situation around their quarterback is the fasted way to this team winning more football games. That is how the Eagles did it. The challenge will be finding the players to help make that a reality. Early projection worry free agency and the draft are light on offensive star power. Then again, projections swing and miss all the time. It’s on the Chicago Bears to prove it.
