Sports briefs: Bergmark, Texas advance to NCAA volleyball title game
Former San Marin High and Marin Catholic standout Bella Bergmark had a pair of kills as the No. 1 overall seeded University of Texas women’s volleyball team advanced to the NCAA title game with a 3-1 victory against the University of San Diego on Thursday night.
Bergmark also had one dig as the Longhorns (27-1) advanced to Saturday’s title tilt against the University of Louisville (31-2). The Cardinals, also a No. 1 seed, defeated Pittsburgh in the other Final Four matchup.
The Longhorns, who won titles in 1988 and 2012, are making their ninth appearance in the title game and their sixth over the past 14 seasons. Texas lost to Louisville in the 2019 Regional Semifinal.
Bergmark has 57 kills for Texas on the season, including a season-high nine against UC Davis. on Sept. 7. Bergmark was an all-MCAL second team selection while playing for MC as a senior in 2017 and for San Marin as a sophomore in 2015.
Boys soccer
Michael Myers scored the eventual game-winning goal and assisted on an insurance tally as Marin Catholic topped San Marin 3-1 on Thursday in a makeup game from last weekend.
Myers netted MC’s second goal on an assist by Lisandro Guzman then provided the pass on Sam Testa’s goal. Enrique Guzman opened the scoring for MC (2-4-2, 1-2-0 MCAL), assisted by Daniel Ortega.
Nico Baretta scored an unassisted goal for San Marin (1-3-1, 0-3-1).
Girls basketball
Selina Ruano got San Marin off to a fast start, scoring 11 points in a 63-28 win against Terra Linda (2-5, 0-2) on Friday. The Mustangs (7-2, 3-0) got off to a 18-4 start in the first quarter and never looked back.
Keeley Wright had team highs of 14 points and eight steals. Lailah Carey added 13 points and six steals. Brigette Islas added seven points and three steals while Sammie Lim and Emma Rogers scored six points each.
