Ben’s Back!
Ruaidhri Higgins has confirmed this afternoon that Ben Doherty has joined the Candystripes on a 3-year deal from Larne.
The 25-year old made a total of 59 appearances during his earlier three year stint at the Brandywell before leaving in 2018 to go on loan to Glenavon.
That was followed by a spell at Coleraine before Doherty headed to Inver Park where he impressed in a number of positions for Tiernan Lynch’s outfit.
City boss Higgins was clearly delighted to bring the player back to Derry in a no-fee deal that will see Joe Thomson and Micheál Glynn join the current Irish Premiership leaders.
“It’s a great deal for us and I’m really happy to get it over the line.”
“If you look back over the last few years you’ll see how Ben has developed into a more complete player.”
“He’s also in exceptional condition physically and that’s a credit to the hard work he is putting in ”
“Ben joins a list of players like Michael Duffy, Shane and Patrick McEleney and Ciaron Harkin who went away and then came back to the club as better players.”
“He is very versatile and is a fantastic asset for Derry City.”
“I would also like to thank Joe Thomson and Micheál Glynn for their service to the club and wish them both every success in their careers going forward.”
The player himself said he was looking forward to being part of what will hopefully be an exciting time at the Brandywell.
“I really enjoyed my time at Larne FC and want to thank the club and their supporters for making me so welcome.”
“It was difficult to leave with the team top of the league and playing so well, but when my home team came calling, it was impossible to resist.”
“Ruaidhri is building something really special here and the whole city is getting behind the club.”
“I can’t wait to be part of it.”
