Imran Khan Pledges Campaign Trail Despite Threats
Imran Khan, Chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) political party has said that despite serious threats to his life, he will go out campaigning in the upcoming general election.
In an interview with a private news agency, the former prime minister of Pakistan spoke about threats to his life, and precarious political environment in the country, and his plans regarding general elections.
“I don’t feel safe, but I will have to be extra careful now. I will have to use a bulletproof screen while addressing crowds and attending rallies, however, nothing can stop me from campaigning and fighting against the status quo,” the former premier said.
Khan and Nawaz Sharif, the two-time prime minister whose PML-N party is tipped to win, are the only two leaders addressing big rallies and appearing among crowds.
Mr. Khan reiterates that the country could possibly face economic collapse if the general elections are not held soon. He believes economic stability is directly linked with transparent elections.
He further expressed his concern about the deteriorating situation in Pakistan the longer the current government led by the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) stayed in power, the Sri Lanka-type situation could become more probable.
Despite the shaky economy, security and growing militancy are major problems in the country, mostly executed by the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) throughout Pakistan. Considering the status quo, Khan says that he will continue rallying if his party’s demands are not met.
The former premier believes nothing can disqualify him from the upcoming general elections, and his party is fully prepared to embrace the challenges, and dream to establish a government backed by the general public, not by foreign powers who interfere in the internal affairs of Pakistan.
