Pakistan seeks Afghanistan’s cooperation in countering terrorism
Foreign Minister of Pakistan Bilawal Bhutto Zardari emphasized the need for cooperation between Pakistan and Afghanistan to combat terrorism.
Zardari, in an interview on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos on Friday, said, “I am confident that if we can work with the Afghan interim government, which influences these groups, we will be successful in maintaining our security,”
Meanwhile, he added that “we are not interested in initiating a cross-border operation, nor would we want to push for an advocate for military action after what we have already witnessed was the most prolonged conflict.
Instead, he asked the interim government in Afghanistan to join hands in combating Tahreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and other terror organizations threatening Pakistan’s security.
On the other hand, he accused PTI chief Imran Khan former prime minister of Pakistan, of providing TTP with a place to hide. He said that Khan released the TTP prisoners in Pakistan’s custody and engaged in dialogue with them.
When asked if Pakistan had hoped the new Afghan government would take action against the TTP, FM Bilawal responded, “Our desire, and they agreed that their soil would not be utilized for terrorism. We hope to work with them to combat terrorists, which is a concern to us.”
He also condemned the recent attack on Kabul’s foreign ministry and noted that Pakistan and Afghanistan had been the victims of terrorism. He emphasized that the two sides would have to work together to counter-terrorism.
