Jurgen Klopp noted, with some amusement, that he probably wouldn’t have got on particularly well on the touchline had the pair’s teams met competitively on the pitch.

The German had been asked to reflect on the Scot’s kind words before the 0-0 draw with Chelsea – the 55-year-old’s 1,000th game as a manager – and admitted that he held a positive relationship with the former Manchester United head coach.

The Merseysiders are set to next take on Brighton and Hove Albion in the FA Cup following the 1-0 replay win over Wolves.
