BART closes Lafayette station after major medical emergency

LAFAYETTE — BART closed its Lafayette station on Tuesday morning after a major medical emergency, officials reported.

A person had intentionally entered the tracks for unknown reasons when a train approached the station about 6:28 a.m., according to BART spokesperson Cheryl Stalter, and “a collision may have occurred.” Foul play was not suspected, she said.

Stalter said about 7:20 a.m. that the operation had become “a recovery, not a rescue” and that coroner’s staff had been called to the station.

Trains were not stopping at the station as of 7:30 a.m.

Contra Costa County Transit was providing service to commuters between the Lafayette and Orinda stations, according to a BART alert. Stalter said that authorities were working on a larger bus bridge. It was not clear when full service might be restored.
