Wayfair and 8×8 prep job cuts in Bay Area in fresh tech layoffs
CAMPBELL — Wayfair and 8×8 have joined a fresh round of tech industry layoffs by revealing plans to jettison a combined 135 jobs in the Bay Area, official state filings show.
With the new filings, along with disclosures of wide-ranging layoffs by Google, the prospect of tech and biotech staffing reductions could loom over the Bay Area for months to come.
Wayfair, an e-commerce company, has decided to eliminate 74 jobs in Mountain View, WARN notices filed with the state Employment Development Department show. Boston-based Wayfair specializes in online sales of furniture and home goods.
Campbell-based 8×8, a cloud-based communications services firm, intends to reduce staffing by 61 positions at its headquarters on Creekside Way in Campbell, according to the WARN notice sent to the EDD.
The layoffs at both tech companies are slated to be “permanent,” according to a post on the EDD public site.
The staffing reductions are expected to take affect by March 20, in both instances, the WARN notices show.
Amazon has said it was cutting 18,000 workers worldwide and has decided to eliminate several hundred jobs in the Bay Area. Microsoft said it was cutting 10,000 workers globally. And Hewlett-Packard said it planned to chop 4,000 to 6,000 jobs over the next three years.
Facebook app owner Meta Platforms, Google, Cepheid, Twitter, Salesforce, Cisco Systems, Amazon, Lyft, Oracle America, Intel, Doordash, Argo AI, Zymbergen, PayPal, Roku and Rivian Automotive are among the tech and biotech companies that have disclosed or carried out plans to eliminate jobs in the Bay Area.
