Why you need to visit the European city with the ‘best beer in the world’

0

THE world’s greatest beer, a thriving arts and fashion scene plus mind-blowing architecture is all on London’s doorstep.

That’s thanks to Luxair’s new route connecting our capital to Antwerp with a one-hour flight.

WHY SHOULD I GO? Famous for being the centre of the world diamond trade, Antwerp is Belgium’s second largest city, after Brussels.

There are more than 170 different nationalities living there, making it hum with energy and expression.

That’s also reflected in a discerning sense of style. You’ll find high-end designer clothing stores including Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Hermes and Tommy Hilfiger.

Museum aan de Stroom is an out-of-this-world nine-story waterside campus. Exhibitions on each floor tell compelling stories about what makes the city tick.

Journey up the building, learning as you go, before reaching the spectacular panoramic rooftop to marvel at the cityscape.

Antwerp is a culture slap in the face with all the trappings of Amsterdam (yes, even a red light district!) but none of the tourist-trampled thoroughfares.

ARE THESE STREETS MADE FOR WALKING? Even in the midst of a sombre January, a sense of atmosphere still stalked the ancient cobbled streets.

Gothic style, picture-perfect buildings ensure your Instagram feed will see plenty of action.

The sloping gabled roofs are an instantly recognisable symbol of Flemish architecture, revered across the world.

Ornate carvings adorn the tops of even the more mundane housing stock.

A visit to the Cathedral of Our Lady, is essential.

Take in the enormous marble turrets, ancient clock faces and magnificent stained-glass windows.

Even the most ardent atheists are sure to be moved by the beauty constructed by devout 16th century Catholics.

Trust me.

ANYTHING FOR THE BUCKET LIST? Antwerp-Centraal station consistently takes the crown for the world’s most beautiful railway terminal and it’s easy to see why.

The jaw-dropping exterior gives way to marble interiors, making even London’s famous St Pancras station look shoddy.

WHERE SHOULD I EAT? Housed in Schippersbeurs, a former stock exchange, Fiera (literally meaning ‘better stock’) has been restored to all its splendour.

This trendy night spot opened three years ago in choppy Covid crosswinds.

Their ability to ride out the storm is testament to a dedication to prosperity and innovation.

An open kitchen allows scents of garlic and truffle to waft through the high-ceiling dining room and the menu reflects Antwerp’s distinctly international outlook.

Paired with a superb collection of wines, you’re certain to leave feeling smug.

I FANCY A DRINK: Belgian beer culture is recognised by Unesco as one of the great human wonders of the world.

There are even health benefits from consuming good bacteria produced during fermentation, but it’s that same process that gives the beer it’s infamously high alcohol volume.

Don’t say we didn’t warn you!

There are tons of places to sample the dizzying local delights.

The best is Bier Central (De Keyserlei 25), where the 120-page ‘Beer Cyclodpedia’ offers over 100 different concoctions.

Following a local’s tip, I opt for a “Trappist” drink, meaning it was brewed by monks . . . in a monastery. It’s generally a mark of higher ethical and quality standards.

WHERE SHOULD I STAY? Just a 15-minute taxi ride from the airport, NH Collection is the perfect balance of comfort and convenience.

It’s also right across the street from Antwerp-Centraal, putting other destinations (Brussels, Bruges, Ghent) within easy reach.

This stylish Diamond Quarter bolt-hole is a welcome retreat after a busy day nosing around town.

Breakfast comes included and boasts scrumptious waffles and pancakes.
