Inside King Charles’ coronation music plans including NEW anthem by Brit icon & touching tribute to dad Philip
A NEW anthem by a British icon and a touching tribute to Prince Philip have been commissioned for King Charles’ coronation.
The King has personally selected the musical programme for the May 6 ceremony at Westminster Abbey, including 12 new pieces.
The medley is designed to showcase a range of different styles and talents from across the UK and the Commonwealth.
Musical theatre legend Andrew Lloyd Webber will provide an anthem, while His Majesty has asked for Greek Orthodox music to be played in a heartwarming nod to his late father, who was born in Greece.
The lovely nod to the Duke of Edinburgh will be performed by the Byzantine Chant Ensemble.
Lord Lloyd-Webber, who notably put on hit musicals including Evita and The Phantom of the Opera, said he was “incredibly honoured” to be asked to compose for the historic event.
He said: “My anthem includes words slightly adapted from Psalm 98.
“I have scored it for the Westminster Abbey choir and organ, the ceremonial brass and orchestra.
“I hope my anthem reflects this joyful occasion.”
There will also be six orchestral commissions, five choral commissions and one organ commission, all provided by British composers.
A handpicked gospel choir called The Ascension Choir will perform, as will the Choir of Westminster Abbey and the Choir of His Majesty’s Chapel Royal, St James’s Palace.
They will be joined by the young female choristers from the Chapel Choir of Methodist College, Belfast, and from Truro Cathedral Choir.
Choral soloists will included bass-baritone Sir Bryn Terfel and soprano Pretty Yende.
Andrew Nethsingha, organist and master of the choristers at Westminster Abbey, which has housed coronations since 1066, said: “It has been a privilege to collaborate with His Majesty in choosing fine musicians and accessible, communicative music for this great occasion.”
Sir Antonio Pappano, music director for the Royal Opera House, added: “His Majesty has chosen a most beautiful and varied programme that I believe will enhance the splendour of this very special celebration.”
Historical pieces will also be featured, including works by iconic composers Handel and Elgar.
Fanfares will be played by The State Trumpeters of the Household Cavalry and The Fanfare Trumpeters of the Royal Air Force.
The news comes after plans for the coronation concert the day after Charles is crowned suffered a huge blow as two superstar singers declined invitations to perform.
However, one legendary Brit-pop group is reportedly holding crunch talks over a reunion for a gig to celebrate the new sovereign.
