[Men's Lacrosse] Lacrosse Rally Falls Just Short in Season Opener
Opening the season against four-time NCLL Division II national champion West Chester is as tall a task as one can face. Trying to rally late in the game to pull off perhaps the largest upset in recent memory is an equally large task, and yet a resilient Williamson club found themselves attempting to do just that on Saturday afternoon in their season opener against the Golden Rams.
Coming off a 4-11 season a year ago, a young Mechanics squad found the going a bit rough early on, trailing 6-2 at half time. While some might have thought a loss against the nationally ranked Golden Rams might be a foregone conclusion at that point, a vastly improved Williamson team from a year ago was having none of that. Their defense tightened up, while their offense gained momentum. They pulled to within 6-4 with ten minutes to go and then actually got to within 6-5 with two minutes to go before losing steam at the end and letting up two late goals, one with just 16 seconds left, to make the final 8-5.
Despite the loss, head coach Jim DeRose was upbeat.
"Obviously we hate losing, but our guys showed a lot of heart and there were a lot of positives out there today. We will use this to build on and will only get better from here."
Shane Titus (SR/Springfield, PA) led the way on offense for Williamson with two goals, while Konnor Oreskovich (JR/Glenolden, PA), Cooper Conway and Matt Dickinson (FR/Springfield, PA) each added one apiece.
