The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has confirmed that one of its bases in Syria’s northeastern Syrian region came under attack on February 18.
In a statement that was released a day after the attack, the command said that the Green Village base, which is located within al-Omar oil fields in the southeastern Deir Ezzor countryside, was targeted with two rockets.
“No U.S. or Coalition troops were killed or wounded and there was no damage to Coalition infrastructure or equipment. U.S. forces in northeast Syria are investigating this incident. There are no claims of responsibility at this time,” the statement reads.
The attack on the Green Village base was first reported by different Syrian news sources. The same sources said that the coalition’s Mission Support Site Conoco, which is located within a gas plant a few kilometers to the north of al-Omar oil fields, was also targeted with several rockets. CENTCOM has not confirmed or denied this yet.
A few hours after the attack, a series of Israeli strikes hit targets in the Syrian capital Damascus and in nearby areas. One of the targets was a multi-storey building located near key Iranian installations in the highly-secured Kafar Sousah neighborhood. Five people, including four civilians, were killed and 15 others were wounded as a result of the strikes.
Syrian and Iraqi factions affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) were blamed for several attacks that targeted U.S. bases in Syria over the last few years. Some of the attacks were indeed carried out in response to Israeli strikes on Syria, or sabotage attacks within Iran.
The U.S. will not likely respond to the rocket attack on the Green Village base as the side responsible for the attack remains unknown.
