Alasdair Gold explains the decision Spurs could give Hugo Lloris this summer
Alasdair Gold expects Tottenham to allow Hugo Lloris to decide whether he wants to remain at the club as a number two next season or return to France in the summer.
Tottenham are expected to prioritise signing Lloris’ successor this summer (Daily Mail), which is unsurprising, given the Frenchman’s decline this season.
The likes of Everton’s Jordan Pickford (The Sun), Brighton’s David Raya (Revolo), Napoli’s Alex Meret (La Repubblica via Calcio Napoli 24), Inter Milan’s Andre Onana (90 min) and Sevilla’s Yassine Bounou (Estadio Deportivo) are alleged to be on the North London club’s radar.
Lloris’ current deal with Tottenham runs until 2024 and it remains to be seen whether the experienced goalkeeper will stick around at the club until the deal runs out.
Gold has suggested that the decision might be left with the 36-year-old, given the service that he has given to the club since joining from Lyon in 2011.
However, the journalist opined that the goalkeeper might be tempted to return to Ligue 1 if he is told that he is no longer the club’s number one.
When asked if the Tottenham captain will stay at the club and be shepherded out of the starting eleven slowly next season, Gold responded in a Q&A on Football.London: “Much depends on Lloris. He’ll have a year left on his deal, as will Forster.
“Spurs are looking to bring in the long-term successor to the Frenchman this summer and having been at the club for 11 years at that point, you’d expect Lloris to be given the choice over whether he wants to fight it out with the newcomer and help him adapt or make it a clean break and move on for what might be final move of his career.
“Lloris has always spoken about heading back to France to play and perhaps if he feels he’s going to spend more of next season on the bench then it might not be a hard decision for him to make.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Lloris is not the sort of man to overstay his welcome as he showed with his decision to call time on his international career after the World Cup.
If the Frenchman is informed in clear terms that he will no longer be the first choice, I believe that he will want to return to Ligue 1.
However, if Conte and his coaching staff make Lloris feel wanted and tell the goalkeeper that they still count on him, I can potentially see him staying until his contract runs out.
