Opinion: Five things we learned from Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Chelsea
Tottenham Hotspur made it back-to-back London Derby wins this afternoon, following up on their 2-0 victory over West Ham with yet another at home to Chelsea.
Let’s take a look at the five things we learned:
Skipp to the good bit!
Oliver Skipp is off the mark for Tottenham and what a way to score your first Lilywhite goal! Shooting is probably the weakest part of Skippy’s game, so a thump from range is hardly what we expected to be the difference today. Hopefully, this can really be the making of him.
Kane’s quiet season…
Harry Kane is quietly doing his business this season. No hat-tricks. Rarely getting braces even. Harry just knocks in important goals when you need them most, over and over again. In fact, he has carried the Spurs attack for large parts of the season.
Today marked 18 goals and two assists in 25 Premier League games (BBC). If not for Haaland’s 27 goals in 24 games, Kane would be making headlines. But the fewer headlines, the better for Spurs.
The Chelsea curse –
No matter how well Spurs are playing, no matter the form of the two teams, no matter the competition, no matter the context, Tottenham have always struggled to get results against Chelsea. In fact, coming into this, Spurs were without a win in their last eight against Chelsea in the league (11v11).
With their awful run of games, it seemed written for the Blues to grab all three points today, but Spurs were so disciplined and tactical in everything they did. A deserved win for the Lilywhites!
Mr 100% –
Cristian Stellini’s 100% record continued today, making it four wins from four as the stand-in Spurs boss. An important victory over Marseille, and 9 Premier League points against Man City, West Ham, and Chelsea. That’s not bad going! Well done to Cristian, Ryan, and the rest of the staff.
Top four race –
Tottenham are now looking solid in the top four, for the time being. On 45 points, four behind Man United and four ahead of Newcastle (although these clubs have one and two games in hand on Spurs respectively), Conte will be hoping that his side are hitting form at just the right moment.
It looks to be a race between Spurs, Newcastle, and Liverpool for fourth spot this season, and Tottenham just put an extra two points between them and the Reds this weekend. Consistency is key for this race, which has ultimately been Spurs’ weakness this season.
