Andrew Brandt spent a long time in the NFL as a personnel and cap guy for the Green Bay Packers. He was a scout in the 1990s, helping build their 1996 championship team, and then became an exec in 1999, where he set out to eventually lay the foundation of their 2010 championship team. This man bled green and gold even after departing the organization in 2008. This guy has no bias when it comes to the Chicago Bears. Quite the opposite. He loves sniping the Packers’ longtime rivals at every opportunity. That said, Brandt has always kept his opinions as fair as possible when assessing franchise situations.
He appeared on the Rich Eisen Show to discuss various topics, with Aaron Rodgers being the central issue. However, Eisen brought up the Bears at one point, asking what they’d do with Justin Fields and the #1 overall pick. Brandt made it clear he doesn’t think Chicago is trading Fields. It doesn’t make sense. Teams rarely move on from 1st round quarterbacks after two seasons. He believes it’s far more likely GM Ryan Poles will trade the #1 pick. Based on his experience and knowledge of the situation, Brandt admitted the odds are good that Chicago will end up with a strong return for it.
Andrew Brandt is echoing what many keep saying.
He wouldn’t say something like that unless he felt it was true. Everything points to the Bears having a strong market for that pick. There are quality quarterbacks in this class—several teams in the top 10 need one. Better still, two of those teams are division rivals (Houston and Indianapolis) and sit near the top at #2 and #4, respectively. That should create a bidding war by itself. Bringing other teams into it will only sweeten the pot. So yeah, Poles couldn’t ask for a better situation.
No doubt Andrew Brandt quietly hopes the Bears find a way to blow this—still, respect for giving an honest answer. There is no clarity on what will happen. There probably won’t be until at least late March once the main wave of free agency has passed. Teams should have a clear idea of the quarterback market by that point. Then Poles can decide what to do.
