Collins Wins North West Regional as Bison Place Second; Chamberlain, Fegert Third

0

SHARON — The Clearfield Bison sent eight wrestlers to the PIAA AA North West Regional and came home with eight place winners, led by 139 pound champion Brady Collins.

The eight place winners, the most in the tourney, carried the Bison to a second place finish in their first ever trip to the AA regional. Fort LeBoeuf, with their three champions, out distanced the Bison 122.5 to 106.5. Perennial AA power Reynolds was back in third with 94 points. The Curwensville Golden Tide finished in nineteenth place with 27 points and had a third place finisher in senior Nik Fegert at 145.

Clearfield went 22-16 for the entire tournament, the most individual wins of any team. Curwensville was 9-7 overall. There were no Clearfield/Curwensville bouts in the entire tourney.

The other Bison place winners were third place finisher Carter Chamberlain at 189, fifth place finishers Cash Diehl at 107, Evan Davis at 121, and Ty Aveni at 145, and sixth place finishers Brndyn Chamberlain at 114, Colton Ryan at 127, and Colton Bumbarger at 133.

Collins (35-3) won his first regional title with an 8-4 victory over Wyatt Lazzar (36-5) from Commodore Perry. Collins reached the finals with a 13-3 major decision over Cranberry’s Dane Wenner (33-9) in the semis.

After Chamberlain dropped a 12-8 decision to General McLane’s Magnus Lloyd (29-7) in the semis he won two 3-2 decisions to earn the bronze medal. He defeated Brayden McCloskey (34-14) from Reynolds in the consy semis and then Ryan Welka (22-10) from Fort LeBeouf in the consy finals.

Collins and Chamberlain are both making their second trips to the PIAA State Championships, with Chamberlain placing eighth last year while the Bison were in AAA.

Curwensville’s Nik Fegert placed third at 145

Senior Nik Fegert (30-12) for the Tide is making his first trip to the state championships after his third place finish at 145. Fegert lost a 13-3 major decision in the semis to Cambridge Springs’ Gunnar Gage (26-5) and then beat two District 9 foes to place third. First he defeated Johnsonburg’s Avery Bittler (29-14) 3-2, last week Fegert beat Bittler 4-2 in overtime of the third place match at districts, and then he easily handled Jaden Wehler (27-11) of St. Marys, avenging a 6-5 loss in last week’s semifinals at Clarion.

Diehl (30-12) was knocked into the wrestlebacks in the quarterfinals on Friday night, then beat Fort LeBouef’s Brady Bowers (27-19) 6-4 and Cochranton’s Kyle Lantz (28-12) by a 20-8 major decision to reach the consy semis. Diehl lost a 2-1 decision to Steven Willis (38-11) from Corry to drop into the fifth place match. Diehl avenged his 3-2 quarterfinal loss to Angelo Lomonte (27-13) with a fall in 4:11.

As a side note to the 107 pound class, Northwestern’s Sierra Chiesa (33-5) was the first female in history to qualify for the state championships after her runner-up finish.

Evan Davis’ final match ended up being his 100th career win

Bison senior Evan Davis (27-10), a state qualifier in AAA last year, was ousted in the semifinals and then lost his consy semi match to drop into the fifth place match. Davis was able to gather himself and pinned Redbank Valley’s Cole Bish (30-11) to earn his 100th career win, just the 13th wrestler in a Bison uniform to reach that milestone. The fall was the 64th of Davis’ career. His final record was 100-46.

Aveni (24-12) received his fifth place medal the easy way as Johnsonburg’s Avery Bittler forfeited out after his consy semi loss.

At 114, Chamberlain (23-17) reached the semifinals but ran into undefeated, and eventual region champ, Weston Pisarchick (27-0) and was dropped into the wrestlebacks where he went 0-2 to finish sixth.

Ryan (24-16) was knocked in to the consolation bracket by eventual runner-up Hunter Gould (36-3) of Conneaut Area where he picked up two wins before dropping his final two matches of the season to end up in sixth.

Coming into the post season with a losing record, Bumbarger (19-20) saw his magical run end with a 2-2 wrestleback record to also finish sixth.
