We were quoted £8k to get rid of our leaded windows so did it ourselves for £50 – our house looks so different now
A COUPLE who were quoted £8,000 to get rid of their dated, leaded windows have revealed how they did it themselves for just £50.
Klaire took to TikTok to share a video detailing the process, explaining that when they realised the “dated leading” was fake, they were able to just peel it off.
“We bought a £2 glass scraper to remove glue,” she added.
“Any leftover glue scrubbed off with cheap nail polish.”
After that, they cleaned the frames with sugar soap, before lightly sanding and painting with Frenchic paint in City Slicker.
“We only used two tins,” she said, before adding: “Everyone thinks we have had new windows!”
Opinion on their window transformation was divided in the comments section.
“Kind of people who put carpet and lino over hardwood floors,” one person wrote.
“Spoiled the house imo,” another added.
“Looks like a business premises now, but good job on the quality of work.”
“Modernisation is so sad,” a third commented.
“I live in the countryside and I’m slowly seeing more urbanisation – slowly losing character in our streets.”
To which Klaire replied: “I totally agree! Love period houses, our town is mainly Victorian & 1930s, we are keeping everything that is original, but windows were from 1980s.”
“Omg taking off the leading to leave plain contemporary builders windows is so heartbreaking,” another wrote.
With Klaire responding: “And if they were original to the period, I would completely agree, but these were just 1980s fake.”
“I had no idea they made false lead windows…” someone else said.
“Yes fraid so – all the rage in the 80s!” Klaire said.
While other people praised Klaire for the amazing transformation.
“Hard work. Well done -they look amazing,” one wrote.
“Why is everyone so bitter in the comments? The windows look a million times better. Good job,” another added.
“Looks so much better. Shame someone had put cheap stickers on in the first place,” someone else agreed.
