WTM To Compete With Ferrari, Duqueine In 2023
WTM Racing has revealed a packed 2023 race programme, the German outfit is set to compete in multiple series around Europe with GT3 and LMP3 machinery.
For its GT3 commitments, partnered with Rinaldi Racing, WTM has purchased a new Ferrari 296 GT3, which it will campaign in select NLS rounds, the Nürburgring 24 Hours and the 24 Hours of Barcelona.
On the Nordschleife, Leonard Weiss, Jochen Krumbach, Daniel Keilwitz and Indy Dontje will take part in the 51st edition of the Nürburgring 24 Hours in the SP9 class for the team. In preparation, it will also compete in the opening three rounds of the NLS season, and the 6h ADAC Ruhr-Pokal-Rennen later in the year after the 24 Hours. In addition, the team will compete in the 24H Series 24h Barcelona in September, defending its crown.
“With the new Ferrari 296 GT3, we have a state-of-the-art GT vehicle at our disposal,” says WTM owner and driver Georg Weiss. “But that also means a lot of coordination work at the beginning of the season. We’re delighted that our partner Rinaldi Racing has another Ferrari project at the Nordschleife, so it can collect double the data and experience. That should help us for the 24-hour race. I’m also very happy that my son and Torsten made it into the ELMS. That’s a big step for all of us and makes me very proud as a father and team boss. We are looking forward to the season and hope to spray champagne on several occasions!”
Fresh from its Asian Le Mans Series campaign last month, the team has also outlined the LMP3 programme for the remainder of the year. This year the team has decided to graduate from the Michelin Le Mans Cup to the European Le Mans Series with its Duqueine M30-D08. Georg and Leonard Weiss will continue to share the team’s M30, joined by Columbian Oscar Tunjo, who brings GP3, GT3 and Prototype Cup experience to the effort.
“The ELMS is a new challenge for the team and for me personally,” Leonard Weiss says. “I’m all the more pleased to know that Torsten will continue to be at my side. He’s simply the perfect teammate and a good friend. I’m also looking forward to Oscar, which we’ve had so far as strong internal team rivals at Rinaldi Racing. Together we should be good for a surprise or two.”
