Afghanistan’s Territory Should not be Used for Sheltering Terrorists: India
Afghanistan’s territory should not be used to harbour, train or finance terrorist activities, particularly those carried out by terrorists and organizations prohibited by the UN Security Council, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj said on Wednesday.
“As a contiguous neighbour and long-standing partner of Afghanistan, and given our strong historical and civilizational linkages to the Afghan people, India has direct stakes in ensuring the return of peace and stability to the country,” Kamboj said.
The Indian representative to the Indians, Kamboj, was focused on the safety and security, humanitarian situation and women’s and human rights in Afghanistan.
She said on security in the country, “Peace and stability in Afghanistan are critical imperatives that all of us must strive for collectively. India will continue to play a constructive role in pursuing this objective. The interests of the Afghan people will always continue to be at the core of all our efforts”.
She added that the humanitarian situation in the country is “deeply distressing” and informed UNSC about the humanitarian assistance India provided to Afghanistan in the past year.
On Tuesday, India announced it would collaborate with the United Nations World Food Program to provide 20,000 tons of wheat to relieve Afghanistan. In comparison, India had previously delivered 50,000 metric tons of wheat to Afghanistan via land route Pakistan.
India expressed worry about the growing efforts in Afghanistan to exclude women from public life and asked for the inclusion of women and ethnic groups in the country’s future as well as the complete protection of their rights, Kamboj said.
Moreover, India has consistently raised its concern about terrorism, radicalization and drug trafficking in the region and most of the time, it refers to a veiled attack on Pakistan.
In a recent statement by the India and Central Asia summit in New Delhi, on Wednesday, the participants released a statement that said, “The territory of Afghanistan should not be used for sheltering, training, planning or financing any terrorist acts and reaffirmed that no terrorist organizations, including those designated by the UNSC resolution 1267, should be provided sanctuary or allowed to use the territory of Afghanistan,” the statement said.
