‘Not enough’ – Harry Kane offers honest verdict of current situation at Spurs
Harry Kane has said that Tottenham should be aiming higher than just finishing in the top four, admitting that the performances over the last week have simply not been good enough.
Spurs’ elimination from the Champions League on Wednesday night after the 0-0 draw in the second leg against AC Milan has effectively confirmed that the Lilywhites’ 15-year trophy drought extends into another season.
Kane’s own future at Spurs has been the subject of much speculation recently, with the striker now having just 15 months left on his contract with the club (Transfermarkt).
The Sun reported on Monday that Manchester United are confident that they would be able to sign the England captain in the summer if Tottenham fail to finish in the top four this season.
However, the striker has now admitted that just securing a top-four finish is ‘not enough’ for the club.
When asked if Spurs can count the season as a success if they secure Champions League qualification, Kane told The Evening Standard: “No, I don’t think so. Where we’re at as a club, we should be winning trophies. That’s always the aim.
“The top four [alone] is a consequence of not playing as well as we want to play. Now that’s all we can fight for so that’s going to be the goal and hopefully, we can achieve that come the end of the season. But for sure, it’s not enough for this club.”
The Tottenham fans certainly made their displeasure known when Conte responded to Cristian Romero’s 77th-minute red card by bringing on Davinson Sanchez for Dejan Kulusevski six minutes later.
When asked about the substitution being met with jeers from the home fans, Kane responded: “I totally understand [fans’ reaction]. Top four [alone] is not good enough for anyone at this club, especially the fans. They have the right to voice their opinion. The last week especially just hasn’t been good enough.
“Before the Sheffield United game, the season could have been a whole lot different. If you go through there, you take that momentum into the league game [at Wolves] and this game. But I feel like that loss last week put a dagger in our hearts and as you can see we haven’t really recovered from that.”

Top four was clearly the bare minimum expectation for Spurs this season and I would argue that we do not even look likely to achieve that, with Liverpool now hot on our tails.
In fact, I believe we would have a better chance of qualifying for the Champions League if we part ways with Conte as soon as possible, even if it means putting Ryan Mason in charge on an interim basis.
